    It's Probably Pirates

Is this quest required before you can get other quests?

It's a storyline quest. So yes, it is required for story progression and opens subsequent quests that will remain closed until It's Probably Pirates is finished.

It's your first dungeon quest too.

Yeah, I know, that's why it seems weird that it's required to progress. I'm a tank, PUG averse and now I have to be a PUG's worse nightmare - a tank who doesn't know the dungeon.

But thanks much to everyone for the answers - I can stop wasting gil travelling around looking for something else to do. Or maybe I should finish leveling up my dps class and learn the dungeon first.

I was thinking the same way as you before jumping into the first storyline instance - after all, tank is the leader role and we should know what we're doing. "What if there's some boss mechanics I can't figure out in time?" "What if I fail epicly in holding aggro?" With sweaty hands I pressed the Duty Finder and took a leap of faith...

And well, the first instances are very simple (on purpose). Mobs are mostly stacked up in groups of 3, nothing special. No one shouldn't be hard-pressed in tanking Sastasha.

It's the first dungeon... if you are going to play a tank it's the spot to learn how to do it.

    It's not hard at all.

This. It is designed specifically for people that are new to partying and MMOs in general. It's very linear so you can't get lost, group pulls are small, and the bosses are straightforward. Don't be afraid, chances are the people you get with you will be completely new too.

The only hard bit is the end but if the DPS lot take out the additional mobs as soon as they appear then it will be all good

I've had (multiple...) GLD tanks that don't even have a shield equipped. Do that and you're already better than a few people by default lol
