WE WANT VANITY SLOTS!!!
I quite like how pretty much the entirety of Part 1 of the Live Letter was Yoshida saying that all the gear we would be getting from it would be useful once we get the Vanity system, yet it won't be coming until 3-4 months later in 2.2. I understand that it's too late at this point to make it into 2.1, but I would accept it coming out a few weeks after 2.1 as long as we don't have to wait until 2.2 for it.
So sign me up!
Might as well add mine up there, what is the point n all this vanity gear if we an not have the slots until 2.2
Holo Knight
I hope they can get this implemented earlier than 2.2, but in the meantime what I really want is some more specifics about how they plan to implement it.
I'd been hoping for a vanity slots version, where the equipment is unchanged but one piece is slotted in the regular (stats) slot and another goes in the vanity slot, as that sort of implementation provides a lot of flexibility. It sounds like they're going instead with a melding version where you combine item A and item B to get an item with the stats of A and appearance of B. What isn't as clear (at least from what I've heard so far) is what happens to the original items A and B when you do this.
If the originals are destroyed by the melding process so the resulting combined piece is all you have left, that creates a lot of problems for unique items. If, on the other hand, you keep the original appearance item and the stats item can later be restored to its original appearance (similar to applying Terebinth to a dyed item), then this system could work really well. That would give it all the flexibility of the slots based implementation, while still only needing to have one item of each type equipped at a time. (The only possible drawback I can foresee being perhaps a need for a bit more Armory Chest space.)
The answer to how that will be done changes whether this is something I should be eagerly looking forward to or something that's going to be more frustrating than useful.
It certainly sounded like they're gonna go with a re-skinning system, but man oh man it is such a clunky system and better suited for free-to-play MMOs that want to sell you a bunch of armor skins in the cash shop.
The BEST wardrobe system out there, and one that EVERY MMO should emulate including ARR is this:
I had made a picture a year or so ago, but I lost it, so I just logged into Rift again to make this one. It hasn't really changed much since save for getting a crap ton more wardrobe slots than we used to have. xD I unchecked some of the boxes to show how the ticky boxes work for gear display. The little coat hanger slot on the far left of the wardrobe slots is your default (currently worn) gear. Anyway, the picture kind of explains itself why that system is so great, so I'll just leave it at that.
[edit] Oh, I should add that there are no restrictions on armor class for the gear in wardrobe slots. A mage can stick plate in there if they want, or leather. A warrior can tank wearing a wardrobe that's a mix of cloth and plate or whatever else. Hell you could uncheck all the ticky boxes and go naked if you want. I haven't really seen anyone do this, though. xD A lot of folk like to untick the chest box on their burly bahmis and go for a barbarian-type look though. The customization potential is as close to endless as one can get!

Rift definitely did have a very effective and simple wardrobe system. I would be incredibly happy if this whole exact system was emulated by SE for ARR. We already have tabs on our Character screen and this would essentially not be much different a screen than our current character equipment screen. Except you wouldn't need a belt slot or soul gem slot (since these are not visible things). One of the great things about the Rift wardrobe system was that when you placed an item in the slot it was no longer counted in your inventory, that is also something I hope they do with XIV.
Edit: The only point of your post I don't agree with (from the Rift vanity system) is that for ARR I wouldn't want to see mages running around in plate armor, or tanks in mage robes. Thankfully though, Yoshida's already made it quite clear he doesn't want that to happen either, so it won't. Likely if your class can use it, you can wear it. Which I am perfectly fine with.

Oh and Might as well sign me up for this.
The sooner they get this rolled out the better. It's really something they should have had in at launch, given the fact that they knew they were going to have holiday events with event gear, and then decided to do the LRFFXIII colaboration and give us even more event gear. Yet they won't allow for our armoires to hold any of it.. when that's practically it's whole use aside from storing AF (which gets outdated really fast after you've geared up your first level 50).
