Btw, this is a serious question I am not trolling or something...simply an MMO newb I guess.

A 'Vanity System' is a game system designed to allow you to wear whatever equipment you want for stats, while also allowing you to use whatever other equipment you'd like for the visuals.

Several Examples -

Transmog/Reskin - You take two items, one for stats and one for looks, combine them to have the looks and stats on the same item.
Most 'famous' example - WoW

Vanity slots - You have seperate equipment slots for all visible gear that will display instead of your 'stat equipped' gear.
LoTRO, Rift, etc.

Styles System - You can use the look of any item you've previously equipped before while having whatever else equipped. Or the system is designed so that your visuals and stats are seperate.
DCUO, City of Heroes/Villians, Champions Online, etc.

This is one of the features that I(and many others I've spoken to) have been wanting the most ever since I started playing this game. When you consider that after a certain point everyone looks identical, this becomes even more of an issue.

I remember when I was levelling my archer the other day, I had this cool looking chestpiece which made my toon look like a bad-ass character. Then I ran a dungeon, and the chestpiece upgrade I got was the ugly yellow checkered thing that made me look like I belonged at a carnival sideshow. I couldn't bring myself to wear the thing because it was just that bad.

Baffling this was not a priority for launch. Really you have the armor, how freaking hard is it to have vanity slots?! Your character is yours, how they look is extremely important to RPG players. Its laughable it missed launch and still wont be in the next patch.

When I do find a set of gear I like the look of for a particular class, it makes me not want to level that class anymore because I'll end up having to replace it with something that's ugly as hell.
