You would be surprised what just adding a global ladder system for teams could do for the game. PvP gear grinds are pointless if everybody has the same r23232 PvP gear or whatever, but having a ladder that everybody can see, maybe with some special mount for the number 1 team, is extremely enticing.

Seriously though, this is a horrible decision by SE. I don't understand how they think somebody calling you a noob is going to be more offensive than getting constantly spammed by gold sellers. Might as well remove names for PvE too. Actually, let's just remove the whole chat system so we can protect peoples feelings.
There is really nothing "horrible" about it. The only reason not to like it is because seeing the names would affect how you would personally behave while participating, which is a sign that the name masking is doing its job.

I really don't understand these "i am dissapoint" posts. Names are irrelevant. What reason could you want to see the names of random opponents you may not see again other than to target them because of it?

Seeing names adds the feeling that you are playing against an actual person. Imagine getting completely facerolled by some premade and running into them again a few rounds later. You've now seen how they played and you can try to adjust your strats acordingly. You cannot do this if everybody has the same name. Are people really that sensitive that they can't handle being called a "noob" or a "scrub" for a few seconds while they add someone to blacklist? Personally, I would like to be able to message my opponents or teammates after the game to ask them about how they did x or what build they were running.

i don't know, I think a mob not standing in one place most of the time and behaving in an erratic, not-so-predictable (unless you're bad) manner is more than enough to make me feel that I'm playing against an actual person. That's just me though.

Because the gameplay is fun and satisfying? You get cool gear?

Also, it's never been said if there won't be any stats or a leaderboard or any of that stuff that big epeeners care about, so I wouldn't assume we're not going to have that.

Did you even read my post? I was talking about getting to know the different strategies of different players and teams and how that would be impossibly hard if everyone has the same name. It's the the different styles of play that add the feeling of personalization, not the "erratic behavior" ("hurr durr, time to pvp, let's go act erratically.") Ever play a multiplayer game on the Wii and think, "Well that was fun, but I really wish I could converse with everybody here."? It makes the game feel incredibly empty.

Explain to me, how do you think their is going to be a leaderboard if they aren't going to show any player names? (Welp, looks like the Top 5 today is Fresh Meat, Fresh Meat, Fresh Meat, Fresh Meat, Fresh Meat.)

You seem to just be hopping on the fanboy bandwagon of "SE has a good reason for this. It's a useless feature. Nobody likes to know who they are facing. Nobody likes to communicate with each other." PvP communities are built by getting to know other players, this decision to not reveal player names could be decider between successful and unsuccessful PvP.

Yea, I agree. I play tons of pvp... tons. Mostly in FPS and MMORPGs. You know what? After many many hours I couldn't give a crap about what people have for names. Your all either an ally or a target. The only important information I NEED is if I can tell what class you are to determine what priority you fall under. Otherwise I can easily mark targets for burn orders. We did that in Rift all the time. 8v8 matches.. you know there are multiples of the same class. Takes too long to type out a character name or call it out over voip. Just mark them all up and call out the call signs. Simple... it's the equavalent of PvE raiding in PvP.

The only time I care what people's names are is when either they are trolling chat or I'm trolling chat..... which is exactly why names are a non-issue. There is no valid point you could make for why you HAVE to see a player's name. Unless... it's a tournament situation and then by all means names should be shown.

Because having a leaderboard isn't counter to names not being shown during a PvP match.

During the beta test a scoreboard was shown at the end of the match which includes people's names and servers. The names are simply not shown DURING THE MATCH to prevent trollish behavior.

Because whatever code is behind recording our stats is smart enough to hold a name value despite what the screen has displayed?

This is pretty stupid. I hope it gets changed. No game has ever done this.
