"Hardcast" refers to using an ability is such a way that it has a cast bar rather than having it execute instantly. In FFXIV, pretty much every "cast" is a hardcast so it's not an important differentiation at the moment. In most MMOs, there are procs that allow certain abilities to be used instantly after casting something else. "Hardcasting" would be using it without that proc that makes it cast instantly.
