I believe it's because people expected something different out of the job rather than skills like fester(which is really awesome, just not really summony), and just model-swapping the carbuncles to their respective egis rather than changing them.

Also people expected their summons to be huge hulking beasts that would stomp everything. I like my egis, I just wish they were big enough to ride on. That would be my only wish.
