    Pet auto attack damage calculations

Does anyone know much about this?

One thing I noticed early on is that ACN/SCH/SMN have substantially higher auto-attack damage than the other mage classes/jobs (e.g. I hit for like 10-20 damage at lv50 with BLM wands, but with SMN books I hit for ~70 and crit over 100)

I hypothesized that the reason for this is that the pet's auto attacks are based on your weapon physical damage (which exists but isn't displayed for mage weapons), but i have recieved conflicting signals on this from people. Some people insist that INT and your offensive properties are the factors in pet auto attack damage. Others have said that pet auto attack is based on your STR (but I find this hard to believe, otehrwise you'd see SMN gear that has all stats on it, not just INT and VIT).

I've done a little testing on this but i don't have anywhere near enough data to come to any conclusions. Some people look at me funny when I auto attack (from behind) on SMN but then I point out to them that it isn't the same awfulness as what comes from BLM or WHM, and adds a small bit of extra damage in between Ruin IIs when fighting mobs that don't have massive circle AoEs.

anyway, possible flames aside, has anyone done any research on this? regardless of your actual opinion on SMN's auto attack damage, it's significantly higher than any other mage, so I'm wondering if there is a specific reason for it (because something about pets is based on it).

A pet's ability and auto attack are based on both weapon damage and intelligence of caster. I just did a bit of testing on this, and its easy as day to see this is how it is. Swapping out weapon damage with something much lower will drop pet damage. Taking a substantial loss on intelligence by removing equipment will also lower pet damage as well. Parser and the eye test indicates both of this. Not how much it scales up isn't something I have a lot of analysis for, but it would be safe to assume these two factors are probably the primary reasons why. As far as why a pet and a summoner shares similar auto attack damage; I suspect your character is used as a basis with each summoned pet mimicing the stats you have while differently scaled in terms of vit or int. I'm not sure why they increased arn auto attack damage to that extent rather than just have pets scale more in line to what they want, but thats just how it is.

its a bit funny because Yoshida said at one point that books weren't going to be any more than scratch damage (like wands/staves currently are), but they ended up being substantailly better than the others.

At any rate, thanks for providing some insight. There's a fair few people saying stuff when they don't really know anything, so that provides a bit of clarity.
