Carbonized Matter

I read a guide that said you could get it from fishing, I then however read another guide that said it was only from mining. I am a fisherman and have never got one, so I assume the first guide is wrong but I would appreciate some accurate information.

Where exactly can I get carbonized matter?

Both botanist and miner can get carbonized matter from gathering around level 20. For Botanist, your level 20 class quest actually requires you to gather 100, and they drop outside Aleport in La Noscea iirc. I don't have a miner so not sure for them.

The guide which said it comes from fishing was probably using 1.0 information, where materia worked slightly differently.

Because of the sheer number of them it takes to gather to level, they happen to be dirt cheap on the marketboard. Considering you don't really need all that many of them (1 per materia meld), you're better off just buying them. That's what I do - and my miner's high enough to get them for myself.

Well that is nice to know. I had planned to just purchase them anyways. I do have a friend doing mining as well, but he is also sinking every gil he has into all of the DoH jobs, which I think is too expensive. I am just sticking to fishing and culinary.
