    Questions for Husband-Wife duo

My wife is CNJ-16 seeking GLD. I am CNJ-15, seeking ARC. Love the game, questions:

    1) When we add our sub class, do we become Level 1's of the new class but retain existing stats and actions?

    2) Should we take gil as quest rewards given how rapidly we go through gear, and upgrade periodically until level cap when we go for BIS?

    3) Is there a market for crafting mats? In other words, should be consider gathering classes with the goal of selling mats to supplement income?

    4) We really dislike solo quests in an MMO, it's alienating when our objective is to play together. Are these limited to class quests and can we skip them or are they necessary to achieve important class objectives? Is there a way to identify solo main or side quests in advance in order to avoid them?

    5) When should we start dungeons? We are anxious, but we wanted my wife to first become a tank! I can heal now as L15 CNJ, but will she be able to tank as a L1GLD?

    Thanks!

    1. When you change to an other class you become level one in it, but stat allocation is tied to the class the points were put into, and actions can be shared between some classes, for classes the formula is like, 1 cross class skill every 5 levels.

    2. If you don't need the items, you should go for the gil, small upgrades won't matter too much in the long run, but the gil you get will add up over time.

    3. There is a decent market for crafted items, and some crafting materials go for decent enough sums on the market board on my server.

    4. Some Story and some Class quests are solo affairs, but you're just going to have to get over that, since not doing them will prevent you from learning class skills, unlocking your job and its skills, going through the story and unlocking more dungeons. Most solo fights are only a few minutes long, and rarely even hard at that.

    5. You should be able to do any dungeon at the level it is unlocked as long as you are decently geared for it.

Strange, let me see if I understand this correctly. So when you change to a different class, you are that level of that class, independent of other levels? So that means that you must go through 95 levels to level cap a Job (30 main class + 15 sub class + 50 Job)?

And throughout that journey, your character level is the level of whatever class you happen to be playing?

Well, just because Michael Jordan was a Basketball Superstar, didn't mean that he could just walk right over and be a Baseball Superstar. Just because a guy is an expert auto mechanic, doesn't mean the first day he touches a torch, that he can be an expert welder...it also doesn't lower the guy's knowledge as an auto mechanic. make sense?

The job is the same level as the main base class so you only need 65 levels to max the job. Though you might want to level the other sub classes to pull nice cross-class skills from. Yes, for quest turn-in, you can only turn it in if the level of the class you have at the time is higher or equal to the quest level.

Think of it this way. Have you ever leveled up that class? If no, then it starts at level 1 or whatever level you left it off at.

And your math is also incorrect. You only need 65 levels. The 50 job levels include the 30 main class.

Don't think of everything as "character". Think of it as class. If you level a CNJ to 15, you have a level 15 CNJ only. If you switch to a PUG, you will start off at level 1. If you level up PUG, CNJ, etc to whatever level, then that class for your character will be that level. If you don't level up the individual classes, you obviously won't have any levels in them.

Part of the confusion is that you are using the terms "class" and "job" as if they were the same thing. Classes are the basic professions you start the game with and after level 10 you can learn any of the others, starting each of those at 1st level. Jobs are the multi-class hybrids you can learn once you have level 30 in one and 15 in another, and that level will always match the level of the main class. For example, Paladin (job) and Guadian (class) will always be the same level no matter which you gain experience with...so basically all Paladins (Bards, Monks, ect.) start at level 30 minimum.

Ok, I think I've got it and it makes sense (although Bo Jackson did play MLB and NFL. Still, point made :-).

What determines the "main base class", the highest level? My wife and I both started as CNJ only so that we could play together and she needs 15 CNJ to make PLD and I need 30 CNJ to make WHM so it seemed to make sense. But she wants her "main base class" to be her tank (GLD). I don't know if this just a semantic issue or what. She is in Ul'dah and about to become GLD1. Should I head to Limsa and get ARC1, or stay CNJ 15 and level up with her in Ul'dah? I'm guessing it doesn't make a difference since we will apparently retain our overall class levels for main story and side quest purposes.

Thanks, folks, and sorry if I sound confused. I am. I love the depth of this game, but it's really a new model for me to wrap my head around.

Edit: I posted this before Kincade's response was up. So my wife's PLD class will start at whatever level her GLD is once she takes the PLD Job, the GLD is her main base class. Thanks, that makes sense.

Yes, but that really only matters for one thing: your EXP bonus. You get bonus EXP (for mobs, not quests) that's based on the difference between your current class and your highest class.

Yes, if she wants to be GLA/PLD, then that's what she should level. You don't need to "declare" a class as your main or anything like that.

Since your goal is to play with your wife, you should stay together. You can go grab the ARC ACN class in Limsa and then go meet your wife in Ul'dah. It's your choice whether you want to level your ARC ACN or your CNJ with her.

When in party together, you both get EXP for all of the kills you get, as long as you're close enough to each other. I suggest working on your Hunting Logs together (press H). They give quite a large amount of EXP for the effort, and with two people working together, you can kill higher level mobs.

Also, FATEs can give quite a lot of EXP. You can either level together with your ARC ACN, or "Level Sync" down with your CNJ - less EXP, but the heals can help you stay alive if you need it.

Basically, you'll level faster if you're together. You'll only have to break party for a few class quests (which you can grab every 5 levels - don't forget) and VERY few story quests. To answer an earlier question, story quests are denoted by the "flame" icon when you talk to quest givers. You can also open your quest journal (press J) to check.

Pretty much. Your level is the level of your currently equipped class.

Edit: Forgot one thing: You have to unlock your Hunting Log before you can do it. I think it's your level 5 (?) class quest. For the first 20 or so entries, all of the mobs are located close to your starting area (e.g. Thanalan for GLA, La Noscea for ACN). So it would make sense to grab ARC ACN, meet your wife, and then go back to do your ARC ACN5 quest later.

Great suggestions and info, everyone. Many thanks.

I just flew into Limsa as part of my airship Envoy quest, I'm going to pick up ARC here, then conclude the quest by flying (for free) into Ul'dah and join my wife there. We both completed Difficulty level 2 of our CNJ Hunting Logs, so we'll probably start working together in Ul'dah on other stuff.

Should we wait to do a dungeon until she has her GLD leveled up a bit, or do you think we can start right off now. She's L17 CNJ, about to get L1 GLD.

    Thanks again,
