"Men do not stop playing because they grow old. They grow old because they stop playing." - Oliver Wendell Holmes
I laughed pretty hard when I read this, only bc I encountered the EXACT same situation not three days ago. I joined my second guild, Botanist, and as I'd never changed classes before I was quite surprised to find myself suddenly bare-ass naked in front of my new Guildleader.
You do get a unique gathering robe very early on in Botanists'. I can't recall which lvl exactly but it's the lvl 5 quest or before.
If you'd rather not be naked until then, you can wear your starting racial clothing. If you sold it like I did, there's at least one merchant who sells it, in Ul'dah. Look for an NPC seller called "Independent Importer"; you can buy any starter racial gear for under 100 gil and it's wearable by all classes at lvl 1.
Someone told me there's a similar merchant in Gridania, which I never found, but if it's true there's probably one in Limsa as well. I only know for a certainty that there is one in Ul'dah.

Now that the Moonfire Faire is active, I'm having a blast getting bathing suits for all of my all my girl characters. (Yes, I am a chauvinist pig.)
The first thing I do when I make a new female character is run out into the world and hunt up the Moonfire Faire FATE that happens in the starting area. While I'm waiting for that FATE to pop (it's on a 30-minute timer) I kill every critter that I come across that won't kill me. This helps me to level-up pronto-quick so I won't die during the FATE.
As soon as a character is authorized to learn crafting and gathering she pops into a cute little bikini instead of her racial attire, and turns into one sexy Botanist.
Your Class guild master will give you permission to join other guilds after you complete his L10 quest.

gutta admit i was like "wtf" when i took up my second job & was thrown into my *commando* uniform ^^
There are benefits to wearing clothing while gathering. For one, you get stat boosts, which will make gathering easier, which will help you level faster.
Also, as you gain XP while wearing gear, the gear's SpiritBond (SB) level goes up. When the SB level hits 100%, you can convert the gear into Materia. (The gear is destroyed in the process.) That Materia can then be attached to other gear to give it stat bonuses. Here's a primer on Materia.
So while you can probably get away at lower levels with gathering naked, there are definite reasons -- maybe even better reasons than avoiding the sight of naked lalafells -- to wear clothes.

A lot of level one gear does *not* provide stat bonuses. Your starting racial gear, in particular, provides nothing but defense.
I remember my Gladiator got progressively more naked as he approached level 10, until he was just wearing a belt and armored underpants.
That was, apparently, full battle dress.
You can even use the helmet of the CE with the 20% bonus xp, it also counts on gathering experience (sorry, i dont know the english word for Xp in ff, it's 'Routine' in german. Yes, german. Arrr).
