i believe thammy can stand up to black mage mainly because everything you need on blm comes from thaumaturge anyways. Thaumaturge has access to internal release and blood for blood in addition to sharing raging strikes with black mage. They're probably an exception though i've heard monk doesn't offer all that much over pugilist either.
