On a side note, is there not some sort of means to be able to target the target of the tank? Some sort of assist macro? I don't mind marking targets - I do it even in obvious fights just to get into the practice for more advanced PvE, but I imagine assist macros would be more efficient?

There is, it's:
/target <tt>
as in, "target's target"

There was also a way to automatically target the mob marked with 1 but I forgot how it went.
