This company is a complete mess. I won't go into detail on all of my own adventures wanting to pull my hair out with these guys. But just to get my character selected on the forums I had to sit clicking repeatedly selecting a character slot that would light up yellow as if selected, but wouldn't save when hitting the save option. Only when I specifically clicked the LITTLE STAR ICON BY THE FACE!? did it finally work. That's the kind of thing I sort of expect from these guys at this point.
Also, I like how there are 78 pages of people having the same problem trying to help each other, and the only SINGLE POST from anyone that works at Square Enix is a post telling everyone to check their banks and that it's basically their fault. That being said.

THIS SHOULD WORK FOR ANYONE. (At least I really hope so.)
On the first screen, select whatever account setup you want. It doesn't matter. BUT--
Make sure you select CRYSTA as a payment option.
Paying with Crysta and buying Crysta with PAYPAL is the key to this whole bastard.
When you select Crysta as a payment method there should be an option above to pay for Crysta with paypal or other methods.
I bought Crysta using that or whatever else and then just payed for the game using that Crysta.
It should count as the website's currency and go through just fine like mine did.
The fact that there's a paypal option at least gives you an alternate solution to using your card.
A broad company like PAYPAL might have better luck with mass transactions with a consistent client, and seemingly paypal's management isn't completely inept.
