According to that, basically if my smartphone gets destroyed, lost, or whatever before I am able to transfer the token from one device to another, I would be unable to log into my account ever again.

Now, I'm thinking of not using the security token. I don't want my access to FFXIV:ARR and my characters to be dictated by the physical safety of my smartphone I carry around in my pocket.

Now, one would hope that you could call up a Support Phone# and get it all sorted out, but simply going by the wording of the linked notice... it doesn't exactly seem like it, huh?
