    According to that, basically if my smartphone gets destroyed, lost, or whatever before I am able to transfer the token from one device to another, I would be unable to log into my account ever again.

    Now, I'm thinking of not using the security token. I don't want my access to FFXIV:ARR and my characters to be dictated by the physical safety of my smartphone I carry around in my pocket.

    Now, one would hope that you could call up a Support Phone# and get it all sorted out, but simply going by the wording of the linked notice... it doesn't exactly seem like it, huh?

    Print out the emergency password - store it in a safe place. If you bought a physical CD of the game - putting it in that box is good.
    It changes once you use it. Not every login.

    If somebody breaks into your house and steals that piece of paper, you have bigger issues than worrying about an MMO... so that's what I recommend.

    You may be panicking from this:
    *In the case you cannot perform an emergency removal of the Software Token, you will no longer be able to log in to or use the various services related to your applicable Square Enix account.
    In which case, continue reading to the bottom for this:

    If you have lost your Emergency Removal Password or are unable to perform the emergency removal of the Software Token yourself, the Support Center will be able to remove it for you once account ownership is verified. Please review the FAQ below for further details.
    And keep that emergency password safely stored, not carried around with you.

    Either the Physical one gives a remove password (emailed) when activated or since its a physical token and not an app, then you may need to just use Customer Service to remove it.

    If you login using the instructions given on the article on today's Lodestone news - the page you land on when logging in will show the emergency password in red letter at center screen.

    Do note that it says if you lose it, you'll have to verify through support... that's probably a painfully long process or carting out serial numbers, payment info, addresses, and so on...
    - So the caution of 'don't lose that number' is one to remember.

    I just checked for mine, no such password or red lettering just a page which shows i have a token registered and its serial number..

    The emergency password is only available to app key users. It's not there when I was using token but appeared as soon as I switched to phone apps. No idea why.
