See, that's what people say, but then they do what you did.
"but you didn't realise because we didn't go around screaming about it, we just accepted it and moved on." Are you not telling people about it now. If you truly didn't care why must you bring it up every single time?
@OP: Deal with it.

Firstly, I'm not personally upset by this, as it's supposed to be over by 8 my time, which is slightly before I expected to get online anyway.
However, I wanted to point out that this maintenance is exclusively for worlds in the NA/EU datacenter, which means that conflicting with JP primetime is not a relevant factor in the scheduling at all.
It's a 2-hour maintenance starting at 4pm PST on a Thursday, which means it's from 8 am to 10 am JST.
They could easily move it up 8 hours to 4pm JST, which would be 12am PST on a work/school night.
It's also during the workday on Friday for Europeans. SE employees could still go home by 6, and nobody's prime time is affected in the slightest.
It's only 2 hours, so it's hardly the end of the world, but from my perspective, it looks like they put very little thought into the scheduling.
ERMERGAWD noooooo! It's all about you isn't it? I mean how dare the devs not totally revolve all their development concerns around your schedule. The world must be ending....http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest...2eba7f60667e41
Who is picking these times? Because someone should seriously be fired from their job. You guys have already screwed us NA players out of countless hours of peak game time and you are still doing it. Learn to schedule this at appropriate times. It's not that hard since you are claiming you are monitoring the servers so closely. I can tell you my server has a que during this time of the day so maybe you guys should do it earlier. or much later.
On a positive note: Maintenance ends at 9pm my time, right when I get home from work. :P

2 hours, man, what to do... Maybe I'll cook dinner, eat dinner, wash the dishes, then play... what a novel idea.

There are a lot of logical fallacies in this thread.
Even tho its just two hours..
These maintenance are becoming "quite" common. I wouldnt have a problem, if the maintenance wasnt during peek hours.
Even tho they service a worldwide community, they have two options:
1)To schedule different maintenance times for different zones. JP servers , EU servers and NA servers all during different times.
2) If they have to schedule a maintenance.. for all the servers at the same time.. at least they could rotate the schedule... so one time it only affects NA, another time it affects EU, another time it affect JP.
For me it seems they are adjusting everything according to JP hours... and even tho this is a japanese game, they do comercialize their game in NA, therefore we are entitlted to have some sort of quality in the service we are paying for.
Also, this maintenance thing... even if its just for two hours.. is becoming quite "common". I do know they need to fix and improve the servers.. but why dont they improve their service by having a weekly schedule maintenance at non peek hours like some other games.. therefore we all would know that at certain day, at certain hour... FFXIV its unavailable..
I guess my point is that even tho they are doing nothing wrong.. there's something called "better practices" and they improve the quality of service... This as many other things in the game.. are just tiny examples of how SE could improve their service by improving their methodology.
This is a Japanese game, and they likely set their hours according to Japanese peak hours.
If this were a game made and based in NA time zones, you'd have an argument. But you really don't.

Are we going to have the displeasure of seeing these types of threads every single time there is maintenance scheduled?
Yes, it definitely sucks when people aren't able to play for a particular time on the one day of maintenance, but honestly... those of you wanting them to change the maintenance times aren't really serious, right? They have set schedules for these types of things for a particular business reason -- whether you choose to believe that or not.
Contrary to popular believe, no one's going to die if they aren't able to play the game for two hours on one day. All of this complaining about maintenance times -- Come on now. Can we stop being unreasonable here? It's just maintenance. Yes, it happens to lap over NA prime-time, but it's really not that big of a deal. I don't get the need for this to turn into a conspiracy to keep NA players from playing or something of that nature. We're stuck in the maintenance zone. Please stop being so sour.
Well... "Common" sense isn't all that common anymore, now is it?
