Proper way to leave a dungeon?

Last night I had one hour to play, I was excited because I was going to be doing my very first dungeon! I logged on and immediately joined duty finder. I have been stuck on the very first story dungeon FOREVER because I have limited game time during the week, this time I figured I had an hour, that should be enough time.

…36 minutes later I finally get in the dungeon. Crap. I had never done a dungeon or even played with a group of people, I had no idea how long it would take. I was playing the DPS role, the other DPS, the Tank and the Healer were all perfect! I was quite surprised because of all the horror stories I have read on these forums.

We were making our way through with no problems. 5 minutes pass, then 10, then 15…. I was having a blast but I realized we would not finish in the 10 minutes I had left. I felt like a huge D Bag. I didn’t know what to say, “Sorry guys, I gtg!” Didn’t seem to cut it.

Ugh, it killed me, this group was perfect and I was SOOOOO close to finally get past this part in the story so I could continue.

Alas, I left the group, saying nothing and logged out. I didn’t even go to a sanctuary because I was just so bummed.

So my question to you guys, what is the proper way to leave a group in the middle of a dungeon if you HAVE to? With the queue times being as long as they are, it is nearly impossible to know “If I get in queue now will I have enough time?” Is it polite to just leave? Should something be said at the beginning of the dungeon if I have less than 30-45 minutes? Should something be said before I leave?

    Thoughts?

Just say - sorry need to leave, going to work, house is on fire - what ever - so other knows it's IRL issue / time schedule which forces you to leave, not them personally.

HEC is right. If there is a reason given for a real life issue some players are a little more forgiving. I have no problem when someone leaves as this is a game. However, usually when one leaves without a message we cannot tell if they had stuff to do, got bored, or had a good old fashioned rage quit.

I get where you're coming from. The DF can be unpredictable, and certainly eats up a lot of time just setting the damn thing up. In an ideal world, you'd just resign yourself to other endavors and withdraw from the DF once it became apparent you couldn't have completed the instance it was setting up. Now, I'm not criticizing you here - Its hard to gauge how long a dungeon can take (moreso when it's your very first time in it :P)

The DF gets its share of ragequitters these days (people who bail if they die or aren't happy with the grouping) and just to not leave that sour aftertaste with the remaining members, I'd probably explain quickly that RL (Real Life) issues came up, and I have to leave. Most sane people will understand the concept that RL is more important than FFXIV, and though you may piss some people off - thats just an attitude-problem on their part.

In short; Just calmly explain that you are sorry, but you have obligations outside FFXIV and you have to leave.

I'd rather hear any reason than nothing at all. Even if I can tell you're lying. Even if you scream at me and ragequit.

A legitimate reason is totally forgivable. An obvious lie might be amusing, and at worst, is forgettable. Screaming is definitely forgettable (I promise not to give a crap about your opinion for longer than two minutes, so no harm done <3).

Regardless, at least if you say something, I know I'm not being a d-bag queueing for a replacement immediately instead of waiting to see if you just got DCed.

While your statement is certainly valid, I thought that party members were still there if they DC'd

Are they? I've been DC'ed myself a handful of times, but never thought to ask what it looked like. I've never had someone else DC on me, but I figured it was like XI, where they're there for a while, but then disappear after a minute or so.

I DC'ed once (even though I was wired -_-) and when I logged back in I was still in the instance. My party only a minute or two ahead of me. Same happened with story mode. I got kicked during a cut scene (because of most recent maintenance) and when I came back the scene just restarted.

We were doing stone vigil last night, we had a bad rash of whms that would join us. Me and a couple friends, WAR, BLM, SMN, were trying to get this mission done. Our main issues seemed to be just getting healed, not necessarily missing any AoEs. Anyhow we got one whm last night, that seemed to idk freak out or something during boss fights, and it would take them way to long to cure me. We got the final boss fight, and there were times id be almost dead, and you would see him either not curing at all(possibly paralyze im sure) or he would be curing himself to full BEFORE curing me. So we were trying to help him understand look man, you gotta focus on curing better, we were pretty nice about it, but you know most people don't seem to have the capacity to take advise/criticism without /emo. So the guy says gl, thats it, and drops out of the dungeon.

We had 25 mins left to do the boss. It finally dropped him at 15 mins left, and we waited until 10 mins left to restart. Our SMN switched to SCH and chose to main heal for her first time ever, and omg I never had such a smooth ride, especially with a Amateur healer... We beat all the miniboss's and mega boss first try. Anyways i guess the only part of that relevant to the thread is even when someone properly leaves the dungeon it for some reason takes forever to drop them out.
