Just because most games usually build upon the base of their predeccessors does not mean that they recycle every single feature

It does mean however developers are smart to use what does work from it's predecessors instead of completely throwing it out for something even far less efficient than it's last. The search system of FFXI was basic and could have been enhanced, instead we get less than basic version that was proximity based.
