Just grinding FATEs alone to level up secondary classes, I always broke even or made more gil than I spent on repairs at an NPC. The same goes for running leves and guildhests.

Dungeon runs are a gil-sink, but with the prospect of earning better gear. So you're sort of paying for special drops because it's thoroughly possible to spend more on it than you get out of it. But that's how it should be; part of the "danger" of a dungeon is to use up your resources.

Crafting/gathering and selling also makes you gil, albeit this comes from other players, and the tax rates are a somewhat pointless gil sink. But the craft leves provide a lot of gil, especially if you deliver HQ product, and not coming out of a player's pockets.

So far on this longer term, I believe the game is generating more gil than it's forcing us* to sink on it. I'm subject to changing my mind when I've played more endgame, but I'm beginning to suspect that this is the overall sum of it.

    * You're not forced to pay for travel expenses a lot, an airship ride here or there, using Return to quickly log out in a sanctuary, and riding most places costs little compared to constant teleporting. You're not forced to buy a lot of things, the game is handing out items on every corner. You're not forced to buy stuff from the market if you can't afford and are just rushing to level out a crafting class, or what not.
