Thumbs Down Feature for Forums

The reasons some of the other people posted above is why I disagree with adding in a dislike button. My last post was blunt, mainly due to I have a tendency to try to justify my reasons with drawn out posts.

Zam is a perfect example. Being there for a very short period myself, but lurk read all the time, I could see how bad this rating system of theirs is. After time, you see how this community builds out, someone being on the site's good site will always have their posts rated up, regardless of what their opinion is. Any trolls or even NEW people on the site would get themselves rated down because their opinion doesn't match, they're a nobody, or you have the abusers that click to rate down just because they can.

So here's my reason why I don't think this would be a good idea. It's a legit response, and yet I bet that if that feature was in right now I would be rated down because the haters don't like my opinion.

The dislike button does have it's flaws, sure. That's because people confuse it with a disagree button. Maybe a better idea is to have a "STFU Troll" button, or equivalent. You can still have a post full of disagreements, but once someone comes in being a complete jerk, they'll get the "STFU Troll" button clicked so many times that the post just disappears into the abyss. Ok yeah, that idea is just as bad, but it's certainly more fulfilling.

They intentionally did not add a thumbs down with the thumbs up feature. Thumbs down promotes negativity and results in everyone rating down eachother every time they say something they don't like or just for the heck of it.

I see so many troll post that fill up a legitimate thread, I feel I have no recourse but to shrug it off and pretend I didn’t just read something in all caps about world of warcraft. I just want to thumbs down someone to de-legitimize their post. I think that would be more powerful than acknowledging them with a follow up thread. That just spirals the crap talk out of control. What do you think?

So shrug it off and pretend you didn't read it. Thumbs down is used incorrectly on every forum that has it, i.e., its mainly used when you disagree with the other person's opinion and has nothing to do with whether he's trolling or not...and lets face it it'll be no different here.

I support implementing a downvoting feature. Without an upvote:downvote ratio, we have no way to determine if an idea is really what people want.
