Have MMO players lost their way?

Too often lately I hear people saying that they skip content purely because they don't like the rewards for clearing it.

What happened to the adventure? The challenge of clearing that boss, just for the satisfaction of beating it?

No gear you need from that guy? F him never gonna do it.

Helping out these people by doing quests and experiencing other stories? Nope fates are a faster way to 50, sucks to be them.

    Seriously, what happened?

Society has gone to the instant gratification and also the fact they everyone seems to want to reach the title of being the best and having the best gear. It seems like a social standing rather than fun which ruins it for the rest for example trying to run dungeons sucks because everyone is running fates for more EXP just my opinion not based on fact

Depends what you want out of the game. I have limited time to play, why would I run something I gain nothing from?

Maybe, for some people, the adventure IS in getting that gear. It's all in what you love about a game that makes it worthwhile - who's to say it's "bad" to play one way and "good" to play the other? Play the way you enjoy the game most. If that means grinding certain bosses and content to get the gear that you want, what's wrong with that?

I cant speak for everyone, but I have a way more busy life. I started playing mmos when I was 10, playing EQ. Back then all I had was school. Now I have school, wife, work and kids. The time I have to play Id like to take furthering my character.

In short, life is a lot busier than it used to be.

And why the hell should I go out of my way to kill that guy? He's just minding his own business. How would YOU like it if I stuck you with my gladius while you were having a nice lunch with your forest friends, and ran off with your clothes? PERSPECTIVE, MAN.

The MMO genre spent the last decade training players to expect instant gratification, high rewards for low risk, and turning the skill level required to play well down to the lowest common denominator. That's pretty much it, really.

I agree. A heavily scripted go to this zone, do quests, level up, then grind for gear games are barely worth being called an adventure imo. Doesn't help when the game world is tiny. Basically they try to write the adventure for us rather than give us a massive and expansive unknown world and just say have at it.
