I've seen some people saying that artifact gear is underpowered, and that Darklight gear is better. So...is it really true that AF+ is worse than Darklight gear, or are people talking about standard AF?

They're talking about standard AF. AF2 is just only slightly better than Darklight if I recall.
Unless I'm mistaken I think Allagan stuff is best?
Gear sets should look a little something like: AF (from quests) > Wanderer's Palace set > Amdapor Keep set > Darklight (philo tokens) > AF2 (myth tokens) > Binding coil of Bahamut stuff (which I think, and could be wrong, is Allagan set).
AF2 and Allagan gear have basically identical stats, except 1 or 2 that are usually opposite of AF2. In some cases Allagan is better, other cases AF2. Depending on what stat you are pushing on what class, it all varies.

Ah, I see. Well while I'm here, I'm curious...what's a good level to tackle Brayflox's Longstop? Is there any specific gear that I should have by time I get there?
What MilaSiri said, except that relic armor is, of course, restricted to jobs while Allagan can also be equipped by classes (last time I checked, might be wrong.)
I think job wise, AF2 is better because it caters to the stats on your specific job. Allagan gear is more catered towards the role itself, also classes can wear Allagan gear. So some may be good, some might not for stats you are aiming for. AF2 likely gives you the exact stats you are looking for on your job.
