Unable to complete version check, POSSIBLE solution

See mine started doing this when my router dc'd me, got internet back after resetting the router, but couldn't get past this error til I did step 3. Doesn't sound like yours was caused by anything internet related. When it's internet related you get the error because SE's launcher can't connect to you to do the version check, and gives you the error, but like I said, since there are many different error codes attached to that error many other things can cause the error as well. Which is why if you look through threads that were posted on this subject you'll notice that people who have posted their errors the numbers after it will be different in a lot of them.
