I did say I think Red Mages should start out as Fencers. When I say Fencer, I mean something like the FFTA Viera class that has debuff-inflicting sword attacks. I have several problems with your retort of enchanting swords though. Firstly, it's a Mystic Knight trait, not a Red Mage trait, secondly, changing the elements of attacks is not much of a perk considering the lack of extreme resistances in this game, and lastly, If Red Mages are supposed to be casters, why are you going to let your Red Mage stand with the Monks and Dragoons. If you don't make them melee DDs, the sword is rendered decorative by role design. They deserve a heal skill/spell, but they should be a DD with a weak heal perk.
