I agree with the OP, they should add them back. It gave people a chance at a unique and rare item that they could sell for big gil, or use it on their character.
So basically you want over camped, RMT promoting, 3rd Party Tool promoting NMs in the game.

SE already learned from XI and if they would bring back NMs again outside FATEs. I see nothing but forced pop or drops not worth the effort to ppl like you just looking to farm gil.

While I agree that hunting NMs was quite a fun and unique experience, it was an FFXI thing. I just don't see how such a system could work in a game like XIV.

To give an example, say you're in Western Thanalan hunting for Leaping Lizzie, you kill tons of lizards to make her spawn, pop her, kill her, then what would she drop to make it worth it? A pair of green boots that would last you 5-6 levels? That wouldn't even be worth the effort.

The reason hunting NMs was such a fun experience in XI, was because they had the potential to drop amazing items that would last you most of your leveling process. There's just no way that they could pull something like that off in XIV. Not that I can think of.

Lol I love it. So many people talking about botting when botting was more or less a non-issue except for HNM and if they introduced it there are countermeasures, and this is of course completely avoiding the fact that mining etc. is being botted, hacked and abused to freaking obscene levels atm and I don't see anyone saying this should be completely removed from the game. RMT was never an issue in XI after they made NM drops rare/ex. Not even exclusivity would have to be an issue if the items dropped could be obtained via dungeons as well, meaning NM drops were just an alternative method of obtaining the items and then it is up to the player what he/she thinks is more fun. It is astounding to read that so many are against it when it would have zero adverse effect on them, but add such fun value for others.

My problem with the current implementation of NM's in Fates is the loss of excitement over getting a rare drop. Even in 1.0, there were NM's that had some rarer drops. Over farming was alleviated with fast respawn rates.

I really don't care as long as the items are rare/unique and don't devalue Relic, Tome, and high lvl dungeon gear (1.0 did a decent job with this). My previous statement was towards the "Big Gilz" player I quoted, which promotes RMT and 3rd party tools. If NMs reappeared via lottery or any claim system with highly desired gear over high lvl dungeons and also in a loot pool. Free Companies will just 3rd party tool to monopolize and sell said items at whatever price they want. Just like HNM drops in XI which turned them into forced pop HNMs.

/signed and agree with OP. Bring them back. It's doable. Just have the placeholders be zone/world wide. So a lvl 10 mob of a certain type in Than has a possibility of spawning the lvl 40 NM version just as much as the one in the shroud does. That eliminates camps because you SIMPLY don't know where it's going to spawn, so bots can't camp them, and you have the possibility of finding them /any/where in the world. That right there is true NM hunting IMHO.

a lot of the replies seem to be afraid of large scale nms and camping. I'm not suggesting that. The smaller nms were extremely fun to hunt imo, sometimes the gear they dropped was next to worthless, but I enjoyed collecting everything. Seeing a "special" mob up somewhere was just exciting! Even if he dropped nothing. As it is, all of the mobs have no unique feel to them. And I think that is exactly what nms give. I loved the mystery of some special pop requirements. Does anyone remember the fungel that spawned in the forest area of xi (I haven't played in years, sorry I don't remember the names). It would only spawn during rainy weather, on a certain part of the Calender I think. The variety of spawn conditions made the entire world seem somewhat a mystery, and each time I explored a new zone I was curious to find out what NMs it had.

ha, fates are not evn close to what nms are. bring back nm:s.

nvm nm:s wont solv anything rly unless the gear is ultra good for lv.50s. fates make all pre-50 gear useless. fate evn make dungeons worthless.

I find the fates a real zerg fest. Not really fun at all. But what about something along the lines Rift has? zone events for NMs and fates that are spawned by 'crystals or tokens. FC could all get together and run fates as something to do together.

    I don't know.
