Ionno, but in all my fate parties, there have been at least 3 or 4 summoners, typically like 4-6 arcanist jobs total.

So there must be something to be said about their current popularity =)

Certainly don't pick them if you're looking for a "unplayed" class. They're about as FOTM as bard atm.

The other thing is, they're awful in non-duty environments. FATE bosses seem to have a maximum # of debuffs (two rows, shadow word pain, =D), literally 2 rows and dots start being overwritten. Don't believe me? Try triple dotting and festering on Svara, you'll do only 1-2 dots worth of damage as your things get overwritten by other players.

Plus you can't hide other players' debuffs, making it a pain if there is ever more than 1 summoner in a group to keep track of dots.

So they're not -hard- to play per say, just annoying and sometimes frustrating to play.

Also pets are just liabilities 90% of the time =(

If SMN can summon the actual Primals, your other party members would be worthless. Why have a tank that is a mere mortal when you can have a god fight at your side.

This is only beacuse ACN is thee only combat non-50 most people have. Once all legacy finish leveling it, you'll find fewer of them.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy both SCH and SMN, but I am still profoundly disapointed in SMN. I pictured a class wehre each eikon would have atacks and moves that replaced most of my main commands and my combat would be mostly via the pet. As it stands, SMN is a barely powered up (if at all, according to the one lenghty thread on here) ACN. In 1.0, PLD completely changed the feel of GLD, and I don't think it would ahve been too much to expect the samn of SMN and ACN.

In terms of a pet class, SCH is way more rewarding. I love that you can manually target the pet heals (though I do wish it wasn't tied to the gcd as this seems more of a bug than working as intented). I've never seen pet healing class in an MMO and it works really well. We've all seen dot + throw-away pet before, I guess we were just hoping for something more, a true magic pet class.

No one expected them to have the power of Yuna's overdrives, but still--you'd expect to feel like your Summon was doing most of the work, rather than chilling next to you with one managed command (garu's dot extension). Hell, even garuda just feels like a re-skin of emeral carby as ooposed to a unique summon.

@Kevee - I don't know about 11 (having never played it), but a thing that all summons had was...they were freaking badass.

They are THE thing people think about when they think about Final Fantasy (well okay, that and Tifa's boobs =D, but at least summons are up there).

And regardless of control, regardless of how effective they are, they were giant, they were huge, they were flashy, and they were definitely COOL.

And I dunno about you, but, Egis are like, the opposite of cool. They're dinky. And they suck. I don't care what attacks they have, they're midget stuffed animals you would buy at a toy store.

They're cool for what we are.

FFXIV SMN was never meant to summon the "big badass" summons that people think about. It's not my fault people can't read.

I get what you're saying, but my summons don't have an ounce of coolness in them.

I'd much rather use my pudgy puk in combat >.>

And regardless of what they say they are in the lore and questing, I get that, but people are going to be let down regardless. I don't think anyone would object to having more summon centric skills, or having a bigger, badder summon.

I would. I like the Egi's. The design is nice, and I like the way SMN plays.

I understand there is no set "Summoner" standard, and that it varies from game to game.

I have to agree with this as well. As a summoner, at this point ( Titan and beyond ) you absolutely have to control your pet. If not you'll have a massive DPS loss. I have heard from quite a few scholars that the fairies are the same way - so I don't understand why people keep saying the summons are not a big part of the class - because if you want to play one well you have to control it.

This, too. A pet is 20-30% of your damage, and if it dies that's a significant loss.

Lots of fights require you to position your pet(or heal it) if you want them to stay alive.

Really disappointed by the summoner class. It's not what I expected at all. I thought summoners were going to be the traditional weak character with the pet that's strong but bio etc and it only gets worse. Then again most of the classes i think are boring as well. THM fire and ice? I expected fira anf firaga then aoe spells separate. Same as lightning etc Very bland.
