When can I start gathering?

I love gathering and crafting and usually start as soon as it's possible but I haven't managed to find out when that is in this game. Search function on these forums is chronic for bringing up totally unrelated stuff.

Can anyone tell me or provide a link please? Thanks

You open the Armory system after you finish the level 10 quest from your start class guild. Once you unlock that you just need to visit the appropriate guild to play as that class, in this case fishing, botany, miner guilds

To add to what Koga_Edge said, each city-state houses one gathering class guild. Let's say you started in Limsa Lominsa; you would only be able to access the fishing guild at this point. Once you have an airship and are able to travel to other city-states however, you may pursue whatever gathering job you wish.

Or you can just walk to another city if you want (still need lvl 10 but not lvl 15)

Koga_Edge: So you called a gathering skill a class? Does that mean I cannot do a fighting class and gather at the same time like in other mmo's? How often can I swap class once I'm level 10? (level 9 now in one city, level 7 in another, yep I need to choose).

Essentially, you can be anything at any time once you've passed a few milestones.

1) Advance in your original Adventuring Class to level 10 and then complete the Level 10 quest for that class. Once you do that, your Guild Leader will allow you to join other guilds.

2) You can join as many (or as few) other classes as you'd like by simply speaking to the Guild Receptionist(s) for those guilds and following their instructions.

3) You can switch classes easily, anywhere and at (almost) any time -- just equip the weapon/tool associated with that class. Let's say you're an Archer out in the field but you want to fish in the nearby creek. Equip a Fishing Pole and BAM, you're ready to fish. The only restrictions are that you can't swap gear mid-battle.

As far as walking, you can't walk from Limsa and walking between the other two city-states is dangerous for a low level. Doable, but dangerous.

The weapon in your main hand determines your class/job, once you unlock that class you are free to switch between them as you please, so long as you're not in combat, every class you gain access to unlock a gear set so you can easily and quickly shift between classes, sorta like in XIII, no fuss ^^

You can start gathering and crafting as soon as you finish your level 10 class quest, which unlocks changing to other classes (including the crafting and gathering classes); you need to go to the class's guild to unlock that particular class. Personally, I'd recommend waiting until you get your retainers (which happens at level 17 in the main storyline), as the additional storage space and the ability to sell stuff on the market makes crafting and gathering go much more smoothly.
