Seeing as the bsm 2 star syths are pointless, does any of the crafts with tier 2 syths matter? People keep saying the heavy darksteel for tanks cus materia slots... is this true? any imput is helpful.

Really depends on your server. On Legacy servers iLvL70 HQ items are traded by flippers for about 1-4 mil atm. Keep in mind these things don't spiritbind unless you go into coil of Bahamut -- meaning they do not bind onto you right away.
More than they need to be, thanks to SE.
I don't expect to ever make them.
9 Potash per Vanya silk. Potash is just under 100K each on Sargatana market board. I honestly don't know if I can get the tomes for Potash from the Weavers guild or a solo content or if it's raid only content. Even if I do participate in raid content it won't be at the level needed to farm the tomes for the Potash and buying them is off the table.
Having to do battle content in order to do crafting content is a bummer, but it IS what justifies making crafted items BETTER than dropped items. There are those who don't see that, but people who take the extra time to level crafts and gathers are also doing the same dungeons that you can do if you only leveled battle classes in order to put them crafts to good use.
But not even SE saw this because they decided to nuke the highest crafts to unfair costs.
