I've always enjoyed point systems for the easy versions for casuals (which is the demographic I usually fall into) but still having the items drop in Hardmode versions of the fights. That way those with the social connections/time can blast through the content and get the gear that they want quickly, but those that aren't as fortunate in the social/time departments can still get the gear that they want and remain competitive in the meta-game. They just have to work at it more slowly but at their own pace.
