Is gear gating what is considered to be harder? The virtual time vampire that is gathering so many of 'special' item to obtain gear needed to move onto the first, second or third tiers of bosses.

I think not. In fact, this formula is responsible for many a MMO's death or move to a micro-transaction framework. The Rift, Lotro, Tera and Aion come to mind.

The only MMORPGs that use this tactic and survive with subscriptions are _________.

This game, if it wants to be successful, should not be relying on its players to run a boss 56 times in order to proceed to the next boss -- simply so the developers have more time to work on implementing how they will sink your time next. (86 times for the next boss!)

That isn't difficult and it doesn't require skill. It requires time, that is all. Time...

... I for one will not be paying for any subscription after my 30 days are up knowing that this game has gear gating and does not rely on skill, or luck of the drops, which is much more rewarding than wasting hours upon hours gathering special tokens to receive the same mediocre gear the next meathead has. I have real work to do in the morning, I want to fight a great fight with great rewards, not a sub-par fight with a token of good luck to add to the pile...

The token gear should always be an alternative, never mandatory. You should be able to go into a boss battle of a certain tier completely naked and be able to beat it due to skill and group collaboration, not because this jacket has +6 instead of +4 which is just enough to push this heal at the right time, etc, etc. It's completely backwards.

This obvious time sink I fear will make people of my age simply not want to waste time on nor give two shits about. Unless of course, they're mindless zombies, and who the hell wants to play with them anyway.

I've been slow-rolling the missions and haven't done hardmodes yet, but from what I've been hearing the challenge in that fight really is just having an internet connection that doesn't have a 2-second delay with the server.

Bye. No offense, but no one wants to know when or why anyone leaves a game. Just go. No one wants the Jerry McGuire "WHO'S COMING WITH ME!?" speech. Every game is gear driven, that's not changing. We don't play MMOs to clear a level like a console game. It's about building up a character through leveling process and equipment in addition to playing with friends and/or family. Currency gear is in place, but gear drops in Coil and most likely there will be drops in Crystal tower. The game has literally been out ~1 month now. Stop freaking out. As for gear and stats most people min/max their characters. It's just something the MMO community does A LOT. Some people will sacrifice livestock to get that extra +2 stat on something. It's just how MMO players roll. Players in FFXI would pay out the nose for HQ gear with just 1 extra stat. At a certain point for the very lucky or the very rich the only way to improve is to upgrade your awesome gear to awesome+1 gear.

You just need to submit a reply with any character amount less than 1000, then edit it. Character limits only apply for new replies, edits have unlimited character limits.

I completely Agree with this fine post. THIS is what we want to happen. I want to finish my tank, when I am not working, or being called to work, or fixing someones email because the idiots forgot to renew their domain and now the dns is pointed to timbuktoo. Great post. I want you guys, to have HUGE pretty weapons and sparkly armor or what ever it takes to make you happy.

Contrary to popular belief, since 2004, casuals are probably more important than the hardcore crowds. These games aren't like they were in 2001, where they could get away with 50-100k subscriptions and call it a success.

WoW didn't exploded, and completely reshape the genre for the next decade because they catered to the hardcore crowd. SE wants, and needs FFXIV to be successful, so they're going to cater to the casual crowd as much as they possibly can, in every way they can. What this means, is there will always be content for everyone and that's the way it should be.

Note: I don't personally believe casual players should be rewarded on necessarily equal terms, but the game isn't going to get harder outside exclusive, optional content (ie: Hard Mode Raiding).

After reading this thread the cynic in me wonders how many of the people asking for things to not change (or become more difficult) want this because they actually 'want the challenge', and how many of them actually just sell runs through this content and don't want to have to learn a new trick to continue extorting others.

Regardless, it seems that the main storyline currently goes through these areas. If people can't do them then they are going to have to be watered down a bit. If the direction of the storyline is altered to not include things like HM then I honestly couldn't care less what happens with those fights.

And to the people using the Duty Finder to deliberately stop others from passing content- karma is a B*****.

Who's "we"? Do you speak for 100% of FF 14?

I don't disagree with you but if you make it too hard and if you have to grind too much then people will get bored. It should be hard but not as hard as you're implying.
