Thanks for the useful information - specially for someone that mains Summoner and plays Scholar when needed ( and yes I DO revive dead members as SMN during raids - you can't imagine how many battles were saved because of that...)

I usually use a lot of Adloquium during fights to "overheal" with shields while patching up minor wounds. If the wounds aren't closed, I manually toss a quick embrace.
Usually I'll never let my fairy heal on her own (sometimes she saves my own live when I'm too busy healing the others xD) - while I start my cast to heal one member I can quickly target the next wounded party member and hit embrace. Really loving the split healing method. I mean combined, Scholars can heal for a whooping 700 potency single target heals with the cost of one Physick!
But lately I've been using Physick less and less because you get quite a lot of mp later on to cast Adloquium really often (on top of that, I compensate the high cost with the free embrace heals x))

Agreed that Lustrate is amazing on tanks, specially warriors - with 3 Aetherflow stacks you can patch up 60% HP again in a very short time WHILE you can run too.

As for the Arcanist spells, most of those are only used for their additional effect - Miasma/Miasmara is awesome if the enemies heal, Shadow Flare is basically a mini Slowga(= reduces damage received) and Eye for an Eye is just another great damage reduction buff which is especially useful when your tank pulled too many monsters at once lol. Virus isn't a DoT as it only reduces 4 stats for a short time (try this on Tumult to see the difference!)
Rouse sits on a 60sec cooldown at least at level 50+ so it's always nice to cast it once it is up - you can spam empowered embrace for 0mp.

Surecast is great for casting long spells on attacks like the reckoning blast at Garuda - but fails when you are paralyzed though (like in ADS)

As for Eos vs. Selene - I usually just prefer Selene during trash mobs and not too extreme boss fights. Using Eos on bosses that just need extra healing power and extremely tough fights where survival is top priority)

Yeah, I am necroing this thread, but i really don't care. I am tossing in my "Thank you!" for this guide.

My sweetie beta tested this game, and she pulled me into it just watching her play the Beta. I heal in literally every MMO I play . . . Rift, STO, NWO . . . been healing since the days of Everquest. The only popular MMO I have not tried as a healer is WoW, because despite someone getting me the game to try, I could not get into it for many reasons. It just bored the hell out of me.

However, to make my point, every MMO seems to have new and exciting approaches to healing while keeping the basic concept the same. FFXIV is no different. And now I must admit I am guilty of playing my SCH wrong up until I read this post tonight. FFXIV in the interface and in its guiding class quests does not really emphasize SCH as a protector class, so until tonight I have been using my SCH as a massive spam healer. Granted I have been successful and held my own in the groups I play in, but now i am going to reassess my skills and how I play my SCH and hopefully become better yet.

This guide is the first helpful thing i have found for SCH that I can easily understand and follow. I have asked players in game a lot for advice, and usually I get "elitest" answers, if you know what I mean, which do not help but just belittle and help to boost their own ego. We all started somewhere, and many seem to forget that.

Before i sign off, I want to point out something from the last couple of pages:
    1. The debate over SCH vs WHM in Coil is silly. Have I been in Coil? No, I have not. But in ANY team situation I HAVE been in where there are 8 people, WHM and SCH seem to dance together in a ballad (sorry to take music from you Bards) that keeps the party very well alive. And now that I am more understanding of my abilities from the OP of this thread, I hope that dance becomes even more meaningful.
    2. I am one of those healers that will not do DPS. But endgame content will have a healer so busy they will not be doing DPS anyway. I'd rather stand there for 5 seconds preparing for my next protecting move or mitigation or heal than get distracted by doing a job I am not assigned to do.

Again, thank you for this thread. And if other folks are offended I replied to an old thread . . . well . . . no heals for you.

    Cheers

@Faelandaea Thankyou for the comment Its not really necroing, the previous post was from only a few days before and I was planning to do a big overhaul of this guide hopefully this week anyway (maybe tomorrow if I get the day off work). It is a protector class, but that also lets it dps quite well also. Stoneskin and adloquium on the tank, maybe throw up succor if there's aoe and a sacred soil if you're worried, you have more than enough time to throw down a shadow flare, apply and spread dots usually. Of course, the better your gear, the more your adloq. will shield for, giving you even more time. Alternating Selene's 2 buffs helps overall dps of the party a bit too.

I've only been up to turn 2 on coil so far, but I didn't have any problems healing as scholar. Maybe it gets harder further in, but again, keeping everyone shielded helped out. I think I wasnt as well geared as others in the group as well, I certainly had less HP than everyone else, but I held my own.

Ok, I'm definitely necroing this thread, but I don't care either because I think it's awesome and that more people should read it. It's helped me get my head around the form and function of scholars, so thank you for that. Any chance of it being updated with some 2.1 changes?

As someone just getting into FF:XIV and having decided on a SCH as my main character/job, I am glad I found this post. Useful information in the OP, and somethings to keep in mind while leveling up. I plan to focus on heals while in groups/raids. I agree with Faelandaea about focusing on healing. I look forward to further edits and tips/hints for the SCH class.

    Hi there :>,

I just wanted to throw something in:
Of course, the most important part, while playing SCH is to manage two things.

    1. Your (healing)-abilities
    2. Micromanaging Eos (Selene does actually hold herself quite well even w/o micro).

Yet, and here I'm speaking out of experience (as far as that might go xD), you'll find yourself on some encounters, where you are doing pretty much nothing. In those "down-times" it's a good thing to throw some DoTs on the enemy.
Yes, it is not mandatory and of course it's up to you, but it's a good thing to do instead of waiting for the next damage to occur.

When the situation is at hand, please dont just refuse it, while saying "i can no haz dd-casts; i can only haz healz", think about it and if you can manage to do some damage while keeping your group alive why not throw some dots and let those work^^.

I repeat, just to keep some flames away: The most important for a healer is to heal and keep the group alive as far as it is possible!

It seems like im the only who switches EOS and Selene out throughout the fight, is this the case ?

My reason being Fey glow is the main skill I use on selene, and WD is mainly what I use on Eos, benefits of both fairies; and no the healing does not suffer one bit.

Btw if you are not doing anything and having no MP issues.

you should be DOTing, then if still more time throw up stoneskin on casters, then melee.

I swapped between Eos/Selene for some time, it's kinda bothersome. Of course it is the best way to use every ability to it's max. potential, but it is not necessary in most fights.

Normally I calculate before the fight if I need the extra (AE-)healing Eos provides, if thats not the case I stick with Selene.

As for faerie switching, I typically stick with one or another during a single encounter. I switch them out in between though.
    For example, I use EOS for : T1, T2, CT (trash through Bone Dragon), CT (Thanatos), CT (KB);
I use Selene for T4, maybe T5 (still trying to align DPS with various timers), CT (Atomos section), CT (Archeron).
