Definitely a bit of a grind, but the main story quest leads you right into it.
I am afraid you are mistaking ''leads you right into it'' with ''leads you to the general area''.

Questing XP is essential for your first class. Once you hit 50 you can go without. But you should never skip your main quest.
That is because it isnt apparent that it is in fact important. There is no in-game notification that ''this is important, therefore you must do this'' like a lot of things in this game. The game makes quite a lot of assumptions on new players - so much so you would not believe how often ive had to explain how to get a Chocobo to people, simply because it isnt shown to players.

You will no doubt disagree with me, but this game needs quite a lot of explanation for new players. I know this from personal experience. I have never played any multiplayer Final Fantasy game before this one. So i knew NOTHING. Endless questions, google searches and digging through these forums have provided me the information - simply to be able to PLAY this game.

Most MMO's need no real explanation. You create a character, collect/accept quest, cast spell to kill quest objective, return/hand in quest and that is all. Repeat that until you hit max level. There are lots of things in this particular game that are very new to the whole genre of MMO's. This is a good thing yes, but a lot of it requires explanation - which this game does a really poor job of teaching to new players.
