    Missing Friend; Kurei

Kurei Renvalt, if you see this, where'd you go?

A friend and Free Company member was talking in chat, nothing unusual, and a few moments later logged off. I figured perhaps he got the 90000 error (as he had a few times before during sudden log-offs). As time passed I thought he just logged off for one reason or another, as people are wont to do.

A few hours later one of my Free Company members sends me a message and asks me who the (Deleted) entry in the Company list was and I realized, to my surprise, it was Kurei. He'd never given any signs of wanted to delete his character, wanting to quit the Free Company (deleting a character just to do that would be extreme), or even showed signs of wanting to quit the game.

I'm not a big forum person, so this is my only post, and possibly only thread for a good long time, but I know he was, so I'm here hoping he stumbles on this. I've seen the (Deleted) entry one time and that was on my Blacklist, so I'm not sure what happened here.

I'm sorry to say, but he might have gotten hacked and the person deleted his character.

If you search the general discussion, this also happened to someone recently this is pretty horrible. It was super rare for anyone to get hacked in 1.0, I guess with the increased popularity, the hackers are having a blast. SE really needs to find a way to stop this.

SE did provide a way to prevent this, That's what the security token is or the smartphone apps is for. If people are going to be ignorant about account security and not getting the free security app for their phone or spending a couple bucks on a security token, their account gets hacked then its their fault. I have no sympathy for them.

The day SE released security tokens I bought one, my account has been safe. i know people who have had complex passwords had their accounts hacked number of times till they finally got a a security token. Anyone i know that i know that dont have the security token or the smartphone app then i tell them to get one or the app. its best to protect yourself than loosing everything.

Secure your account or getting hacked is your own fault

That's the purpose of this thread; to let him know, if he comes on the forums (as he was in a habit of doing), that his Free Company is still hoping he comes back.

Darkvision, while I agree with what you're saying, it isn't that simple for people. I do not have a Smart Phone; can't afford it. I Token from back in my XI days, but had I not owned one, I wouldn't have it. I can pay 15 a month for the game, but I don't have the rest of the money to toss into Smart Phone fees and such.

My best advice is to immediately change your password to something unique to FFXIV and use it for nothing else. Write it on a Post-It note and paste it to your monitor or wall. It's safer there than it is on the internet.

The complexity means nothing. Almost all attempts to hack accounts come from entering in known usernames and passwords they gained off MMOs until something sticks, because people dislike using different passwords.

You can have all the symbols and numbers you want, nine hundred characters long, but it doesn't help if you've used it for other games, because all they need to do is paste it in the bar next to the usernames we all rarely change.
