Gil Viable In FFXIV ?

Hello friends!
I was interested to know if it's essential to have big portion of gil in this game.
So far i'm in my early 30s, leveling my crafts, do a decent amount of gil - but i just don't see the need for it.
Everything you need for crafting you can gather and the rest buy off guild vendors for low prices.
End game is any different ?
Do you need gil in order to make Relic weapons ? AF/AF2? ANYTHING ?

Money becomes a bigger factor at end game due to repair costs, market taxes, and scarcity of dropped materials from what I've seen. You can spend a good amount of it at lower levels to make getting around or leveling easier, but more saved means less painful grinding later when you end up having to run FATEs in level 30-40 equipment just to afford repairs on your AF.

That bad huh? god this sucks... you make money just to throw it away 5 minutes later on repairs.
