    DoT Ticks Mathematics Thread

I'm trying to understand how DoT is affected by critical hits/buffs.

    1) Are DoT skills affected by critical hits and damage buffs? (yes?)
    2) Are DoT ticks individual, affected by whatever buffs are present at the time of the tick, or are they all set out from the initial cast of the DoT?

    Here's a few scenarios:
    3) 30 sec DoT cast on 100HP mob. DoT does 10 damage every 5 sec. Total = 60 dmg. 4) Base crit rate = 0%. I now use a buff which increases my crit rate to 25% for 15 seconds, and do exactly the same DoT cast. Does the critical rate apply for only the first 15 seconds, or the entire 30 seconds?
    5) I cast the same dot with the same base 0% crit rate, but after 15 seconds I cast my 25% crit rate buff without interacting any further with the mob. Does this affect the last 15 seconds of my already existent DoT?
    6) Assuming I swap crit rate for damage increase buff, are scenarios 4 and 5 affected in exactly the same way as they are for crit rate?

    I believe it's 3sec a tick.

alright, decided to do a quick test of this with thunder 3

So, the combat log doesn't show dot ticks, but i'll summarize what happened.
The first cast of thunder 3 did about 70-75 damage per tick.
The second cast did about 85 damage per tick, EVEN AFTER RAGING STRIKES FELL OFF.

Also, I did a third cast where i activated Raging strikes after the dot was applied, and the damage of the ticks was unchanged

As it is the DoTs in this game fall under the snap shot rule. Meaning that they will use your stats at the time of application and will not change. Further more the DoTs in this game also use a global tick that is based on the servers clock so all DoTs will tick every three seconds and the exact same time as every other DoT on the server and are actually shown as one combined DoT.

Example: As a BRD you apply Venomous Bite and then wait five seconds and apply Windbite. Both DoTs will tick at the same time and instead of showing as 25 and 20 will show as 45.

Now taking it one step further with the global tick based on the server this also means that by when you actually apply the DoT you may see a tick within the first fifth of a second or you may end up waiting the full three seconds before seeing the first tick.

    1. Yes.
    2. At the time of application.
    3. DoTs tic every 3 seconds on a server-wide scale. So a 10-potency DoT that lasts 30 seconds will tick 10 times, and each time it ticks it will deliver an attack with a potency of 10.
    4. Your base crit rate isn't 0% against mobs of equal level; it's 5%. If you apply a DoT that is in any way more effective than the existing form of that DoT, it will overwite. If the DoT you are applying is in any way less effective than the existing form of the DoT, it will have no effect.
    5. DoTs already on a mob will not inherit any buffs you gain during the duration of the DoT.
    6. Yes. Think of every tic of the DoT as an X-potency WS or spell that happens at a set interval while the DoT is in effect. All damage calculations apply to DoTs as they do for direct attacks.
