Exceptionally long update download times

For the 1.17 and the new 1.17a updates, I have had really slow download times. I have port forwarding set up, and I don't get much lag in-game. It's only during the update process. Is there a port number that I'm missing that's making the update download stop all together for over 10 minutes at a time at random intervals? I've used torrents and p2p programs before, and I've never had this happen once the download has started (except for with Kazaa when that had first started)

No, it's because everyone is getting it all at one time. The servers are a bit loaded. There are alternate means of getting the download, however, I am not sure if they want you doing it that way. Until they fix something on their end, it is going to be this way. Not much you can do about it. If you jump on as soon as the update server comes online usually it is pretty quick. If you wait for the servers to come on and expect to get a quick download then you're out of luck, that isn't happening.

I have good luck at getting the update right when the update servers go online. The longest my update has taken was about 1 1/2. You should try about 10 mins after they shut down the servers usually right about then is a good time to start spamming the login to attempt to get the update.

I've had this same problem with the last two updates. The first few I got were fine and only took me, like, 10 minutes to download the update. 1.17, though, took me a good three hours and 1.17a took me almost six. I actually ended up just going to sleep and leaving the update running since it took so long.

Everyone just keeps telling me to open up certain ports and Square's help page actually tells me to take down my firewall completely (qualified with a "At your own risk," of course, to save their ass if something jacks up my computer), but I've done each of these and it didn't help in the slightest.

There're always a couple of people in our linkshell that post the updates onto mediafire or megauploads, but I've never been able to get it to update that way.

I know taht bandwidth limitations on the servers are a big thing. I didn't think that would make it completely stop though. Not when it's a torrent type download. Afterall, isn't the point of doing things through torrents to make it so that the servers have less load on them (since once one person has the torrent downloaded, they'll be seeding it, and the server load of the next few people will be lightened since there's more than one resource, this cycle will continue to lighten the load on the server and eventually the server will only be needed for the hash check when you start/restart the download)?

That's how ALL of my other torrents work (I average about 1.5mb/sec on a decently seeded torrent), wouldn't it be the same for FFXIV? If not, then SE might want to redesign their update system.

Extremely long? are you kidding me? more like REDICULOUSLY LONG! it took me over 14 hours to download patch 1.17!!! I even stopped and started it many times. I have a really good self made computer and a good ISP, good ping, and above average DL speed. Everyone is stealing my bandwidth and downloading off my connection while my download speed sits a 0 for hours on end!!! This downloader is the most stupid idea i have ever seen in my life! I can download World of Warcrafts entire game and all the patches in 30 minutes and FF14 it takes 14 hours for 1 small patch?

AND SE WONDERS WHY PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO PLAY THIS DUMPTRUCK ANYMORE...?
FIX THE BASICS FIRST!

Bought the game yesterday. Updater times out on the first patch! i'd love to get onto the game. Really psyched to play it.
