よろしく~
Glad you're here, but can we not judge people by the language they use? I really don't mind DPS or DD or PS3 or PC or Toon or Char or Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Thanks![]()
Who cares where it originates from as long as the message is communicated and understood? Stop being snobby about game terms, FFS.
Thanks for a lot of response.(how many hours to read all res!)
I have understood that calling DPS is general things.

From this day forth I shall call all DDs Damage Saucers! <3Hi, I'm Japanese player. sorry to my poor English.
I have heard "attaker" or "damage dealer" as damage sauce role.
But that role is called "DPS" at FF14. "DPS" means Damage Per Second, it's a measure of attackpower, not role name, I think.
From when did it come to say so in English ?
On-topic I never really picked up on the "DPS" trend until I played WoW. More than likely players came to FFXIV and use old MMO terms for this game.
Keith Dragoon - Ambassador of Artz and Adorable
For as long as I can remember ( my first MMO was original EQ release) the damage classes were called DPS by players. that was 1999ish I think? I'm not sure if it was around before that or not. I spent 7 years in EQ and I'm kinda still stuck in that lingo.
DPS = Damage class. I had never heard it called DD until FFXI
Mez = mesmerize in EQ... also sleeps or anything that takes a mob out of combat
LOS= line of sight. (though it seems in FF14 this doesnt hamper mobs only players)
I tried hiding behind things and spells attacks still hit but I cant cast back
Toon/char = character I've heard it called tons of things but this was the most common
So yeah these terms have been around 14 years AT LEAST that I know of..if not longer.

Yes while Damage Per Second used to be what you did, it has now evolved into also a name to describe those who deal the damage and thus a noun. Such things commonly happen with the internet I suppose. lol

FFXIV has players with different MMO backgrounds and terms.
I try to update my terminology if the new terminology is better. I prefer using generic and simple terms.
"DD" (for Damage Dealer) is common, but "DPS" is common, too.
"Threat" is more common than "enmity".
"guildleves", "levequests", and "guildhests" are awkward.
"guild" is more generic than "Free Companies", but "FC" is short.
"CC" (for "Crowd Control") is more common than "mez" and more generic than "Sleep".
"Linkshells" are unique chat channels, but the name is too specific to use outside of FF.
I don't think FFXIV has alternate terms for "los" (using Line of Sight against an enemy), "pat" (patrolling enemy), and some other MMO terms.
It's fine for games to have unique terminology when they have unique features, but people won't use those names in other games if they aren't generic and simple.
FFXIV has many awkward terms that are only going to be used in this game.

This is nice but the confusion with this is that people from other games bring terms from...lets say... WoW and demand people in FFXIV to learn WoW terms when these type of mechanics have their own terms that were named by the devs in FFXIV. Why should we have to learn terms from other games to understand people in this game? Not everyone has played WoW, Rift, or Everquest. Many that play FFXIV ARR have only played FFXI and FFXIV 1.0.
If I'm not mistaken WoW isn't an international game in that it does not cater to all regions like the Final Fantasy MMO's do so this may be why Japanese players can not understand people who use terms from games like WoW in FFXIV. I'm just trying to put myself in the OP's shoes..

In Final Fantasy XI and some others that are older it was always the proper term DD (Damage Dealer)>
DPS was only used to specify gear attributes and damage per second totals.
It started to be incorrectly used by younger gamers who didn't understand terms correctly and changed from there, a large amount in WOW.
