I believe I was killing the Rusty Coblyns from the Pugilist Hunting Log.

Steps:
I had been killing monsters for my Pugilist Hunting Log and had an XP Chain going. I had finished my log but decided to grind out the XP Chain since I was in an area with lots of monsters. I killed a few monsters and leveled from 8 to 9, still in the middle of my XP Chain (I believe there was about 40 seconds left on it at this point. I killed 3 additional monsters and they each gave me normal (non XP Chain) experience.

XP chain is only there when you fight mobs of equal or higher level to yourself.
If the monsters you fought were level 8, the moment you levelled up to 9, they don't give chain any more.

I had a chance to check today and these monsters were actually level 8 so I guess you're right, Nekodar. I didn't realize that was an intended mechanic of the XP Chains.
