Unable to equip Scholar soul crystal

Today, I wanted to try my hand at healing, so I attempted to equip the Scholar crystal only to have the odd message of:

"Cannot change job to scholar from arcanist. You must first switch your class to arcanist".

The error message makes no sense. Note that I can equip and unequip the smn gem without any issue, I can change class as I want also.

I tried zoning, logging, changing to another class but nothing seems to work.

were you able to figure it out? The first thing that comes to mind is to check if SCH is listed on your main hand weapon, not all tomes are ACN/SMN/SCH, some are ACN/SMN and ACN/SCH only.
