The best thing to do when deciding on which server to call home is to log in during what would be your normal hours of play, use Ul'dah as a starting city just hang out in the Adventurer's Guild about 15 min before & after leves reset. If there's not many people waiting to pick up new leves its probably a very good indication that you're on a weak server. There should easily be 30+ people in & around the guild...

I absolutely hate the whole area of Thanalan but still spend all my time there solely because of its location. It wouldn't make sense to camp anywhere else unless they do away with anima or make it regenerate twice as fast.
