    tank learning curves

I gave up on pld after the obscene learning curve that took place after the level 32 dungeon. I started the level 35 dungeon in mostly 32 gear from the previous dungeon. I was taking too much damage in my opinion. secondly why did they add complex mechanics to the 1st boss. as a guy who rolled dps in all previous mmos to date I can say the learning curve on the dungeons is non existent for tanks. this scares players out of tanking. I am not asking for easy mode. I am asking that they gradually make the dungeons harder not make all the dungeon bosses laughable until the last boss in the level 32 dungeon a challenge. then make the 1st boss of the next dungeon that hard with that many mechanics. the bees would hit like mac trucks as I tried to run to a platform. all I really want is a learning curve that I can see. it feels like they see me climbing a hill behind my house and feel I can cimb Everest the next day.

I don't think it's that bad if you have a basic understanding of how tanking works. I've been tanking in other MMORPG's for years so I naturally picked a tank in this. I've tanked with the Marauder, Gladiator, and most recently I finally got a chance to test out Paladin tanking and while it does require more effort than tanking in a certain other MMORPG, it's far from impossible.

    Some advice:

    1. Remember you can use abilities from your other classes in your toolkit. This will give you additional defensive cd's and even a heal.
    2. Mark targets
    3. Tab-target through adds to keep threat on all of them. Flash alone isn't usually enough.
    4. Don't be afraid to use crowd control

    What learning curve?

    Don't stand in bad stuff.

    Face away from raid.

    Hold aggro, keep healer alive.

    Use your skills (cooldowns).

Mark targets if your DPS is too stupid to hit your main target.

    Did I miss anything?

Agree with above... Paladin in this game doesn't have much of a learning curve, you get great passive reduction and a pretty straight forward rotation. What you are talking about isn't really a tank learning curve, it's something everyone doing the instance has to understand.

3, so very much 3. As a healer every single time I heal I get aggro on every mob in the current fight. Tanks need to be constantly making threat on all the mobs.

The OP is saying that the learning curve to tank specific dungeons is too high. They're not saying the learning curve for basic tanking skills is too high.

Dungeons like Qarn wipe parties until they learn fights. The early dungeons are easy, but eventually new players are expected to die a few times.

Also, it's not a tanking problem. If you had been DPS, you would have died from doom and would have got your tank killed because you didn't know about the bees.
Instead of giving up on tanking, have fun with the challenge and learning. If people are rude, remind them that FFXIV dungeons are supposed to have a bit of trial and error.

It's simple learn the patterns and learn to kite before they happen...sadly you have to tank like a dps in other games.... other than that learn what to kill first.

I think the learning curve for tanks is pretty nuts...

I breezed through all dungeons until i finished the Lv50 Story. No Problem. Then I proceed to accept the next set of side quests for post game after i finished watching the credits. The first of these dungeons unlocked is Armpitdoor Keep...

I have no idea what this beast is, but it popped up on duty finder, so I que for it. After like 2+ hours of waiting in que, I finally get into the dungeon. And the first boss I have to fight, is my party. They look at my gear and automatically know that I am not ready for this (since I'm in my gallant armor). I failed this dungeon before I even fought my first mob.

Now I'm pretty sure my party is right, I am definitely not ready for this dungeon.

After some research, I found out, that I need to get Darklight Gear (fine with me- progression is nice). But please Square Enix, move the NPC that gives the Wanderer's Palace quest into the same room as the Armpitdoor Keep.

I've tanked AK in my AF gear like, 5-15 times. It's more demanding on the dps honestly, thanks to the demon wall and final boss having a fixed amount of time before they kill you. Darklight is more of a requirement for HM Garuda, HM Titan and Binding Coil of Bahamut.

This isn't a "I'm amazing and you're not" thing, its just me getting worried about people setting up "gear standards" in the first couple 50 dungeons in the game. FFXIV is predominately about execution, both in how you play your class and how you fight a boss. Besides your weapon, your gear can be a stage or two behind the "meta" and if you know your stuff you can still pull through.

The first boss in Qarn hardly does any damage, if you do it right. There are 2 1shot mechanics in that fight that you have to avoid:

Doom: He casts Doom on everyone in the group once in a while. When this happens, you will die once the counter on Doom runs out. In order to remove Doom, you have to move to the tile on the ground that lights up (the lights shift among the three tiles)

Final Sting: The bee adds that the boss spawns need to be burst down quickly, before they manage to get off their Final Sting ability, which one shots anyone getting hit by it. The ability is interruptable, if dps is low.

There are very few encounters that are gear dependent until you reach cap. Most fights are just execution heavy.

You do NOT need full Darklight in order to do AK, that is a ridiculously baseless claim, especially as a tank. All you need to do, is learn the instance, and make sure all your items are over ilevel 40 (this may require getting some darklight accessories).

The problem with AK, is the second boss, and the second boss is a dps check, not a mitigation check. In fact, it does laughable damage to the tank.

What you need is a patient group that's willing to teach the dungeon to you, and then you're set. And with the removal of skipping trash, it's going to be even easier (but also slower) for you to do.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
