I would love glowing weapons! Great idea.
I would love glowing weapons! Great idea.
I think elemental weapons would be alot better looking if say a sword with increased fire dmg has some fire on it and a weapon with wind has some kind of faint wind aura on it.
If they remake classes spells like enfire, enaero, enbliz could set a weapon a blaze, have frost particles or have a wind effect on it, honestly I feel they could use it to enhance the effects alot. Honestly that is what they where doing in XI just didn't have the animation for it.
They just need to make it minimal, I think everyone reading this is directly thinking of WoW and Aion which was tacky as all get out with every peice of rare gear making you look like a Christmas tree. I think if they done it and kept with the current feel of the game and stuff it would work out fairly well.
With the proposed "materia" system in place, I think it would be neat if they added slight aesthetic differences when inserting different types of materia, which would also help differentiate your appearance by giving two of the same types of gear a different look with different materia infused.
Ex. (thought not necessary, there are better ways to implement) armor/weapon with red/attack-type materia would give a feint red glow or something equivalent, whereas an armor/weapon with a blue/magic-type materia would cause a blue effect instead.
I do however agree that I don't want these to be huge flashy shows of sparkles. I prefer the subtle method of having auras/feint glows about certain points on the item, and generally have it more noticeable for darker scenes and less noticeable during lighter scenes (non-existant during sunlight would be a must).
This is how I think it should be added and having it relate to the materia system would make the idea even better. Exactly how those designs glow is perfect. When using the materia system you should get an engraving into your weapon and if it is an elemental one it should wield a glow effect in the engraving such as the pic above.

I think they should build a subtle, "activated" effect into weapons when you use higher level or special skills/spells. Or maybe apply the concept to rare weapons instead of all common weapons, maybe even introduce anti-alignment (i.e. "good against goblins or marmots") weapons that have this kind of effect happen when it strikes its preferred target
Glowing Weapons (No Thanks!)
The only exception could be during TP moves/Special attacks, in which case it's an effect of the attack rather than the weapon.
Another thing they should have taken from FFXI:
The Aftermath system, instead of building Accuracy/Attack just in terms of states, it'll gain a subtle aura the higher level your weapon's aftermath is.
Done deal.
I've had enough of my weapon glowing often enough because of a bug in animations that I'm not sure I'd like the effect if it were intentional.
That looks pretty cool. It's not like it was impossible to get the effects with FFXI, if you followed the .dat moding community on it's highest note it discovered how to not only make armour more detailed by changing the resolution size of .dat files they also could add effects such as.
This
If your really craving those super duper glowy weapons it's only a matter of time before the .dat community gives them too you, as for the rest of us having a modist glow/aura will suffice. Man I wonder if Mooshy plays XIV...
I understand the level in tackiness ppl are talking about here. But what about effects like in Devil May Cry when Dante swings his sword. The light behind each swing bends due to the incredible strength/power of the weapon. This would work great for epic weapons in FFXIV. Who's with me? Eh eh?!
