Yeah I dont mind that :]I guess I didn't check this thread until it was bumped by Warm.
Overall I say NO to glowing weapons BUT like the opening movie of this game I would say OK on some situations like if your weapon has En-spell casted on and only while the En-spell lasts on it.
Also instead of having the effect on all the time, would be fine on some weapons say like classic FF weapon. Flame Tongue (that how you spell in English? JP is flametan - so dunno if its tongue...anyways) only when you hit the mob and the flame effect happens to show flame on the blade but go away after. (How you gonna put flaming weapon on your side? Even Luke Skywalker and those Jedi/Sith have to put the damn sabers away)
I'll just put that in here since the thread was dug up and wanted to comment on it lol.

This has probably been posted in the hundreds of replies to this thread already from a month or more ago, but for "magical" weapons that might glow or produce elemental effects, I think it would be great if they would do so only when drawn. Wielding it with the intent to engage the enemy should activate the magic, rather than being a glowing fiery liability strapped to your waist while you're in town buying food.
It would also possibly help reduce load in crowded areas like towns, as well as help to appease the "no thanks to giant glowing WoW crap everywhere" crowd.

Here are some of my ideas on glowing weapons..
- Weapons that glow should only glow in active mode.
- The glow effect should not be bright, and should look similar to frodos bilbo from Lord Of The Rings.
- Elemental glow effects and color should correspond with its element. IE. Fire weapons would have a red dime glow effect, and would produce a small fire explosion when the player attacks.
- Glowing weapons should have unique striking sound effects.
- glowing staves, and rods etc. Should have a glowing sphere above the mage weapons, or the top of the mage weapon should glow.
-En spells should have a greater effect, instead of the dime effect, the weapons should be what the element is . IE. A fire enspelled sword would have a visual effect of being on fire, and have a fire effect upon striking. IE. A water enspelled weapon will have water dripping from the weapon and have a splash effect upon impact.

I like this, effects should be visible...but not too distracting and only when you use them. Here are some of my ideas on glowing weapons..

I especially like the elemental effects...perhaps without the constant glow effect, for example sword with fire damage (or Enflamed) would show small flame effect when swinged...something like this: but much more subtle http://www.darkassassin.com/images/B...amingSword.gif
I want some glowing subligar!
No, thank you.

You obtain the Reinhearts Subligar +3

I saw materia mentioned in a few posts and I'm agreement to enhance the way a weapon looks as well as making the weapon stronger. I do think the "glow" should be subtle though. Like lightning should arc a few sparks here and there. I wouldn't like to see the over the top glows/enchantments of the magnitude that WoW has but I think it can be done in FFXIV if it's kept classy.
the devs must be ignorant about people like me looking into the dats and their dat using hex programs.
can anyone actually confirm the lantern shield contains an actual by game program terminology definition glow effect?
from what i saw when looking into it its nothing but a standard texture applied server side, similar to crafting colors.
this technically is not a glow effect, just a texture showing through the alpha mapped metal of the shield.
a glow effect is a greyed alpha mapped animation
more on topic, im all for glow effects on armour and weapons.
