Personally, I don't really see the need of leveling up alts in this game. If anything I would do it just to play around with the character creator.

I agree. Some people are really against alts which I find kind of weird what does it matter to them that I waste my time doing something I enjoy?I don't know why some of you can't understand, but some of us just like to have alts, or have other reasons for it, despite what the "right" way to enjoy a video game is. We "fundamentally don't understand the game"? Yeah, and I guess people who cook at home "are gimping themselves" or "fundamentally don't understand restaurants." Does someone who rides their bike when they could have driven their car fundamentally misunderstand transportation? News Flash: People sometimes do things simply because they enjoy it, even if it's not the most expedient and productive method!

theyre only giving you their honest opinion, which honestly, correct
having more than one character in this game other than for mule is waste of time
there, you said it yourself

I focus on one character, though may wind up playing an alt that will do just one DoW job. I like playing both genders, and having to choose one over the other in this game was really hard. >.<
Though I'm hoping they'll eventually add the phial of fantasia to the mog station or make it attainable via other means than the veteran reward, so I can just genderswap my main every once in a great while.

No, there is nothing fundamentally wrong with it at all. Not every job has access to every class. So how exactly are you gimping yourself by leveling another type of class with a different toon? The problem with this in FFXIV is that you're essentially gimping each character. Jobs use different abilities from other jobs and not having those is a huge deal. Also, having crafts leveled on the same character means cheaper repairs and less hassle to have things made. Making alts is fine, but if you're using a new character for each class/job, you're fundamentally playing this MMO wrong.
No where does the OP state they aren't going to get the necessary cross class abilities for their alts. They can easily have Glad, Marauder, Conj leveled on one character for their Paladin, and have THM, ARC, and Archer leveled on their other for Black Mage. As far as jobs go those sets of three have nothing to do with each other.
Your mind, open it!

To me, Crafting ults don't make any sense. You need to be level 20 to get your retainer and be able to sell anything on the AH, unless a level 20 crafting class counts, but good luck doing the duties as a level 20 miner... And on top of that, you can't mail stuff from your ult to your main, unless they didn't implement the "Can't mail to yourself" thing they talked about in dev discussions during beta (e.g. I haven't tried yet).
This game is designed to do everything on one character. If you want to spend the time to level up multiple classes on multiple characters, be my guest. But having one toon with multiple 50's can be tracked on the armory and you can use that as FC power/entry requirement checks. You're effectively gimping yourself if you have a 50 Warrior on one character and a 50 conjurer on another. You also won't be utilizing the duty finder to it's maximum effectiveness. You won't be able to que as both classes at the same time.
And who is having inventory issues? I find the armory to be HUGE, My Inventory to be Huge, and well, my ratainer has another 5+ tabs... And if I go in the inn, theres some more space in there. And housing isn't even out yet...
I have my main.
My 1st alt which I will use when PS4 comes out so I can experience the PS4 improvements, but for now she can mule.
And my 2nd alt for muling if I need it and get extra gil for me.

I love how this is the first comment on this topic, directly underneath where the guy said "there is no wrong way to play"If you are using alt's for different jobs not only are you gimping yourself, you fundamentally don't understand this game.
I could see an alt for crafting classes to ease up on inventory issues, but if you really need space just use a mule so you don't have to manage double friend lists and linkshell/FC things.
I agree with the original comment, i like having different characters for different classes, i like all the races so its fun to have characters of different races, and its interesting to see the different stories that start out of the different cities
And honestly when I get them all to 50 with the class and jobs that i had in mind ill would probably just get them all to 50 with every class and job, 5000 hours later lol
Also I heard something about them adding new races in the future so who knows, if theyre on for a limited time or something then Im definitely going to make an alt for it so im on of the people who have it

Nothing wrong with having alts, but the job and class system kind of work against that. For example, if you'd like to have one character as BLM, you'd have to level, in addition to Thaumaturge, both Arcanist and Archer for its subs. Then when you'd want to have another character as BRD, you'd be leveling Archer again, in addition to Lancer and mmm Pugilist (can't remember)? No matter what jobs you'd pick for each character you'd be likely to level the same things over and over even though the character would focus on only one of the jobs.
For crafters it's even worse because the more crafts you level on one character the better abilities you have available.
I really don't see any point in it as you can't even share the gear between characters. It's very counterproductive if you want to play the game "effectively" but if that's what you enjoy, go ahead!![]()

I plan to just stick with the one character, here. Knowing that she can have absolutely every class/job and every profession just makes me feel really loyal to her, rather than "having" to have X amount of alts leveled to have access to all of those things. Plus it took me forever to settle on a race and a look that I was happy with... don't wanna do that again!
That having been said, I do hope they address the issue of running out of quests 3-4 class-levelings in soon, heh.
