I don't know why some of you can't understand, but some of us just like to have alts, or have other reasons for it, despite what the "right" way to enjoy a video game is. We "fundamentally don't understand the game"? Yeah, and I guess people who cook at home "are gimping themselves" or "fundamentally don't understand restaurants." Does someone who rides their bike when they could have driven their car fundamentally misunderstand transportation? News Flash: People sometimes do things simply because they enjoy it, even if it's not the most expedient and productive method!
Anyway, as for me, my main is primarily aiming to be a Summoner eventually -- though I plan to also explore all the Magic classes/jobs as well. I just love some of the early cross-class stuff, too.
I also have an alt who's aiming for Monk, but will also go into Archer, or maybe Bard at some point. Once Thief and Ninja enter the picture, those will probably be on this character.
I haven't really gone much into the heavy melée classes, as tanking is not really my bag. I do find the Lancer interesting, though. Maybe if/when Dark Knight or Samurai appears, I'll finally cave and start looking at these classes seriously. Not 100% sure if I'd roll a new alt for these classes, or try and shoehorn my existing characters into them despite it "feeling" wrong to me.
What happens on one character *stays* on that character. There's no carry-over of information between alts. Of course, this also extends to Rested XP, Leve Allowances, Retainers, etc. Having an alt is an uphill battle, but it's also not without little hidden advantages here and there. I wouldn't look into it for any kind of competitive advantage, though. It's mainly a matter of personal preference, or sense of fun.
