Magical Resistance? (Lv.20 GLA Minor Spoilers)

    Hi all,

I've just discovered that my lv.21 Gladiator has a hilariously large weakness to black magic.

I've been trying to complete the 'Face of Thal' quest for the Gladiator's Guild and, while I can defeat the enemy warriors without taking any damage, the conjurers can kill me in a matter of seconds, and the thaumaturges will one-shot me.

Thing is, the equipment I get as a reward for this quest (iron) isn't as good as the one I'm already wearing (aetherial bronze) so I'm a bit lost.

Can I gain magical resistance without losing physical? e.g. from jewellery, consumables, etc. - or do I need to change my set-up completely?

My gear is basically all bronze, with aetherial belt and chest. My accessories are story rewards, so might be behind the curve a little.

    Thanks!

Aetherial is set in a way that It is better than equipment of more lvl requirement, your equipment shouldn't be an issue at that lvl though, hmmmm try to change your strategy by obtaining cross class abilities like cure or something that can increase your survival abilities.

I know this may sound a little 'cheaty' but find a healer and get him to tag along. Ask him to heal you during the battle and you should be fine.
If you don't want to do this try grabbing Cure and get a Conj to give you Protect and Stoneskin before starting it.
Also take out the Black Mages first (they're nasty) as you can tank the DPS'

I have never had many issues with any spell slinger NPC when I was doing my GLA quests. My biggest issue was either a main character dying or being swarmed by NPC's. BM/CONJ NPC's were always easy pickings for me.

This is kinda what I'm confused about.

Previously, the main quests haven't caused me any problems - the first time my character died was at level 20 - so for magic damage to be suddenly so extreme makes me think that something is wrong with my set-up - and the game is only just telling me.

I'll probably have a go at levelling Conjurer before I try it again (I have no healing abilities, apart from Bloodbath).

Don't forget you can hotbar potions & the like, but yeah leveling CNJ couldn't hurt. You'll need it to 15 anyways for Pld

Yeah, I have Hi Potions, but the cool-down is so slow that I only really get one use per mission. I basically lost two health bars in that fight somehow, having used a Hi Potion.

Maybe I was wearing a swimsuit all along?

If there are enemies that are killing you that quickly in up-to-date gear, chances are you're not supposed to be tanking them. I haven't done this one one my GLA yet, but a lot of the solo instance quests I've done (both story line and MRD class quests) required me to be distinctly unMRD-like (in other words, not tanky). Had to let the NPCs do a lot of the work while I wussed out and fought one weak enemy at a time. See if you can avoid aggroing the casters until the NPC(s) have their attention.

Perhaps the mages have a long casting time? This is usually the case when spells do high damage. If it does, you might be able to Shield Bash to keep them from casting.

Worst case scenario: You could just level up a little more and possibly get better gear. I don't remember having trouble with any of the GLA quests but I was capped for all of them.

Also, what Bixby said. You might need to let the NPCs tank them. You should only worry about enemies that target you initially, leave the rest alone until the ones that are actually aggrod to you are dead. Maybe you are jumping the gun and grabbing stuff that isn't aggro'd to you and thus getting overwhelmed?
