Problems targeting specific enemies with PS3 controller

I played FFXI religiously on the PS2 ages ago (my god I was just a baby) and was very fluid with the targeting/battle system on the controller.

I've found that when I enter a fate in FFXIV, though, it's REALLY hard for me to target the main enemy. Particularly with the bobombs (sp?). I can target all the smaller ones but I will sit there, patiently cycling through enemies constantly getting, "the target is not close enough" and I end up hardly even participating in the fate. Are there any solutions to just quick targeting the closest enemy or maybe even just finding a way to point and click with the controller?

I'll be getting a usb keyboard (tomorrow hopefully) so this may change it, but is there something I'm missing?

Wait are you talking about the festival fate? If you are, I think the big bomb cant be targeted, at least I've been unable. If you are talking about targeting issues in general, you can use the targeting filters in character settings.

L1 and pressing the r3 button gives you a cursor it might be faster to select your target that way I'm still getting used to it myself

Hitting X on the controller works exactly like the "Target nearest enemy" key on the keyboard and will prioritize stuff directly in front of you so turning your character towards what you want to target might help. I believe you can set it up so you can make it ignore NPCs too. Filters would also help, as Rokknei mentioned.

LOL! I didn't realize this video was spreading... I was gonna link you to it because I was getting a lot of good feedback about it helping many controller players, but looks like it was already done. HAHA! hope it helps! As for the bomb king... i don't believe you can kill him its just the little ones.
