In what circumstances would you not "enhance" your class with a "job" role?

As I level some classes and make goals for myself, I sometimes think back to the notion that classes were designed to hold twice as many cross-class skills as jobs. I often wondered if I somehow constructed a build out of ten cross-class skills and an un-upgraded class, would I be laughed out of endgame?

I hear a lot of the endgame gear is job specific. Is it all decent endgame gear?

So is the "feature" that classes can assign twice as many cross-class abilities useful at any time? Can it be made useful for endgame? Thoughts?

its meant for soloing (which there really isn't any solo content in ARR) so that you can cross class more defensive and self healing abilities like Second Wind to more classes

Pretty much what he said. It's more for soloing things, but there's rarely any of that going on. There will be few occasions in which the class will be superior to the job in a party.

If they made more useful cross-class abilities, then I MIGHT turn off PLD sometimes. However, as it stands, I'm much better off being restricted to CNJ and MRD abilities like Bloodbath, Cure, and etc. Not to mention my job-specific abilities like Shield Oath, Spirits Within, and Hallowed Ground. Shield Oath is much more useful than having Second Wind.

Sadly, I've yet to encounter a situation where I was better off using a Class and not a Job. In the case of my Scholar, any benefit I would've gained from defensive cooldowns (like the PGL ones) are covered by the healing I get from my Faerie :/

It's not really as useful as it once was actually.

In 1.23 being on your class could prove REALLY useful.

During the Moogle Fight and Ifrit i'd prefer to go Thaumaturge just in case I was needed to back-up heal or raise people.
Being able to use Sacred Prism + Sanguine Rite was AMAZING.

So far in 2.0, I haven't removed my job crystals at all really.

In theory classes and cross class abilities were supposed to be more useful for soloing, but I don't believe that's how it really turned out.

Cross class abilities are nice, but none are really required. You do have everything you need in your Job to combat solo enemies. Not only that, but the Job stone actually gives you a stat bonus. So you are actually more powerful with it equipped.

the only 2 classes i really feel have a good reason to sit in their class form while soloing are MRD and GLD, for extra dps from Straight Shot/Raging Strikes/etc. doesn't really make much of a difference for other classes, though i have dropped out from monk to PGL when i was fighting things a few levels higher for the defensive CD's and Cure.

PLD still has Sword Oath and Spirits Within, I'm still not sure I'd drop those whilst soloing
