As an old man of 33, I've been playing since Garland tried to knock us all down. That said FFIV has been my favorite since I played it on my SNES back in 91 as FF2. Having not only the Paladin job, but wanting the Dark Knight job is a reflection of my love of that game. A very close second is of course Tactics.

War of the Lions. I loved Tactics and the new translations and added features made it even more awesome. The story was amazing from beginning to end. I have the original PS version, WotL for PSP, and I'm currently playing the one for iOS.

Mine is probably FFIV. I am a serious sucker for plot and character development. Between Cecil's magnificent transformation of dark to light and the plot involving the best friend being evil for most of the game then repentant, this game tops my list. (Skipping plot points for spoiler reasons.) Character deaths and "deaths" are heart wrenching. I loved the unique background of each character and overall just loved the game.

Final Fantasy VI is by far the best.

So many twists and turns in the story with great characters. And there are so many of them. Each one has a great story. There are very few moments that stick in my mind, but most come from this game. Setzer getting his airship in the World of Ruin. Kefka double crossing Ghestal, killing all the Espers and destroying the world. Celes and the opera scene. The Phantom Train. Sabin and Edgar had a great story about who would become King of Figaro. And of course the ending. It was just so good. Amano did the artwork, which is a huge plus. The music was the best in the series.

Basically, FFVI was a masterpiece. It was by far the most impactful game on my life.

Hells yes. I hope they remake this on a modern machine at some point in 3D, retell the story a bit. I have to say, I am very pleased with how much VI has influenced XIV.

Its FF7 for me. Its the RPG that started it all for me and I can play it over and over again. A very close 2nd is Xenogears all though not a FF it is a square RPG and it had one of the best plots and combat systems.

I'm pretty sure I have played nearly every FF game ever made in nearly the same year it was released (there are a few exceptions, XI, X-2, and XIII-2). That being said VI, IX, and XII stood out for me. VI is just a masterwork of storytelling and XII challenged the tactician in me to find interesting ways to alter my teams AI for any given encounter. IX was just such a fun nostalgia ride.

On the other side of the spectrum is FF XIII. I tried replaying that a few months ago and man....I didn't last an hour before I just gave up.

Only because I finished them, I'd say it's a tie between X and XIII. X because it seemed to strike the right balance in tone (not too campy, not too dark) and allowed a good deal of customization with the sphere grid. XIII was almost unfairly underrated. I liked that the story took priority for most of the game with things opening up late. Too many sidequests can be distracting to the main storyline.
