Final Fantasy VII, the best RPG of all time!! The best soundtrack, best story, best characters, monsters, battle system, materia etc.. & world map. The closest thing to perfection in a RPG game I have ever played, and likely ever WILL play.
It was made in a time when games were made properly. They were full, complete games. Not purposely cut back or scaled down. Imagine FFVII being made TODAY in 2013... it would have so much DLC.. Those weapon monsters? DLC. You have to pay extra for them! knights of the round? DLC. Golden chocobo? DLC. Golden saucer would have half of the games reserved for..... yes MORE DLC.
Then there would be FFVII-2 and FFVII cloud returns etc..
Thank god this game was made before games became crap.
FFXIV is good and the best FF since 12 but, it's no FFVII!! They will never make another one that good.
Final Fantasy 9 is my favorite. I love the setting, I love the characters, etc. It was the first FF that I actually finished (went back and finished the others after) so it has a special place with me. I would absolutely love to see an HD remake of that game.

If I had to choose only one, it would probably be FF6. It has that total package of top quality music, graphics, story, characters, and world. It's a masterpiece.
I liked FF7 a lot, but I still consider it overrated. SquareSoft released a far superior game (Xenogears) at around the same time, but it was largely ignored because they put all their marketing behind FF7.
But I "favorite" several games in the series for different reasons.
I like FF1 because it was the first one I played.
FF4 because it has such an engrossing story.
FF5 because of the huge job system.
FF9 had Zidane, my favorite hero of any FF game. Also Dagger's orange pants...
FF11 was the one that I spent the most time on, and it's where I formed so many lifelong friendships.
FF12 had a huge, immersive world and a good streamlined combat system.
My favorite is FF6, followed FF13, and FF4.

My fave is still X. After that, I'd probably go with Tactics and then XIII-2. You might be able to talk me into throwing IX into the mix, but not for the top spot. X captured my imagination and ate my life like no other FF game before or since, and I've gotta say that I'm pretty pumped for the HD X/X-2 re-release.
As an old man of 33, I've been playing since Garland tried to knock us all down. That said FFIV has been my favorite since I played it on my SNES back in 91 as FF2. Having not only the Paladin job, but wanting the Dark Knight job is a reflection of my love of that game. A very close second is of course Tactics.
War of the Lions. I loved Tactics and the new translations and added features made it even more awesome. The story was amazing from beginning to end. I have the original PS version, WotL for PSP, and I'm currently playing the one for iOS.
Mine is probably FFIV. I am a serious sucker for plot and character development. Between Cecil's magnificent transformation of dark to light and the plot involving the best friend being evil for most of the game then repentant, this game tops my list. (Skipping plot points for spoiler reasons.) Character deaths and "deaths" are heart wrenching. I loved the unique background of each character and overall just loved the game.
